I've just got onto my mum's insurance policy as a provisional named driver, apparently whilst I do this I can earn my own no claims bonus. Hopefully i'll only be on her insurance for a maximum of 4 months. I am intending to take out my own policy with directline when I get my own car but will these 3/4 months of no claims give me any discount with them?

Nope they won't, also the NCD is also valid with Direct line, not sure what the situation is if you do a year as a named then a year on your own, if you leave direct line would you get 1 years NCD or Two, might be worth asking!

Directline are doing this because the only to claim the no claim bonus for named drivers is to be insured with them. This means that they will only recognise it and will give you a discount.
However, if after the 1 year of insurance when your renewal comes through does it state that the named driver has 1 years no claims or do they just discount it for you?

Im pretty sure theres one other reason for this

Parent or whatever has 5 yrs no claims, adds a learner to the policy who then bumps the car front or rear, costs say £1k to repair but then they gain more because they get to zap the no claims of the safer older driver that wouldve hung onto it for all eternity, i mean lets face it if your a parent who knows your offspring is gonna be a tearaway and most likely have a big accident you wouldnt go for this scheme anyway cos you'd want to protect your own no claims

while new drivers are more likely to have accidents its also most likely that it will be out of clumsyness or not being used to the dimensions of the car so only putting dents in bumpers and doors, im pretty sure the great majority of accidents arent of the flipped the car 3 times variety

The way it works from what i understand is this.
If you are a named driver, you will earn no claims if you dont have an accident.
If your mother then insures YOUR new car when you get it with you as a named driver, not only will you CONTINUE to earn no claims discount, while benefitting from cheaper insurance, it will also attract a further 10% multi car discount while your mother continues to insure 2 cars.

No claims discount is earned after 12 months accident free motering ONLY.

As has been mentioned, only down side of this, you have a knock and it all goes nipples up.

Ok thanks.

If i buy a new car on my own policy with directline will the 3/4 months be carried over?
