DirectX 10

About 10KM.

Basically we're stuck waiting on things like Crysis/etc or for the DX10 patches that are apparently coming out for some recent games.

Then again, you have to 'up'grade to Vista to use it, thereby breaking all your other games. WIN :p

Are you saying Vista won't be backwards compatible with games designed for XP?

Nope. I'm saying that currently drivers are fooked for Vista so installing it only leads to heartache with games. Perhaps that'll change in 6 months or so...who knows?

The old mantra of never buy a version of Windows until Service Pack 1 is released is always a good one to follow, and has never let me down yet!

Well.. in the case of XP it was Service Pack 2!!!!!

You know that MS are planning to release the first service pack for Vista in 6 months - specifically because so many people are saying this.

Ha ha ha... that's funny.

You don't honestly believe that do you?

I would guess, as a layman, that MS are releasing a Service Pack... because they always do, and because the OS is 'a little' bugged!!!!!!

However, lets try your suggestion and all stop saying these things, and then maybe the OS will suddenly become 100% compatible with everything and totally bug free.

Maybe! Worth a try.

I just took it as him meaning that they're releasing the SP asap so it'll seem that the bugs have been addressed...

Exactly - they're quite aware of the 'I always wait for the first service pack' mentality. There'll be plenty of security updates and fixes within 6 months anyway, if they think it will significantly boost sales of course they'll rush it out as a service pack.

Seems lots of ppl struggle to comprehend Sleepery's posts.

S/he's referring to sales of Windows Vista as influenced by customer's perception of it's faults and a service pack release's ability to alter that in the favour of Microsoft.

Aha, I see.

The reason I ask is that I'm planning a new build at the moment and figured since I want to future proof it and get as much life out of it as possible I may as well buy buying a DirectX 10 graphics card, but wondered if there would be any games out at the moment that would fully utilise its potential.

...and umm yes, I won't be touching Vista with a bargepole for quite a while other than on dual boot for tinkering purposes. :D

The directx10 card will be much faster with directx9 games anyway so will be worth it. The windows section have a list of games that do/dont work with vista. It looks fairly good in terms of what games actally work. However this will depend on what hardware you are running. Touch wood I wont have any problems when my new kit and vista ultimate 64bit arrives tomorrow.
