Hi

Whenever I try and install some software, it causes my computer to become sluggish, the mouse stops being smooth and upon restart it takes minutes to get into windows.

I think I've narrowed down the software causing it to be software which is bundled with DX9. It's happened with a couple of games and CS3.

Directx which is bundled with software.

Hmm it shouldn't be DX9 causing problems or the software with it. DX9 should just come on its own. Have you got the latest version of DX9? Is your graphics card limited to DX9 then?

Yeah, it's an oldish card. 6600GT.

It was fine on my last computer, I've since rebuilt it with a Quad and had these problems.

They happen after installing some programs (mainly games) and doing windows updates.

It's solved by rolling back and restoring from a previous point.

Microsoft is regularly releasing updated DirectX 9.0c, there is a March 2008 update available

If you don't fancy downloading that, then run dxdiag and perform the DirectDraw and Direct3D, etc tests.
