Dirt 3 Time Trial

Morning all,

After a couple more hours last night, I've managed to improve my time a little, to a 2:55.678

I've also uploaded videos of this run, plus my best run for Round 2 (Tupasentie) - I think next time I'll need to increase the captured framerate in Afterburner so it's a little less jerky (the game itself plays really smoothly at around 50-60fps)

Round 2:

Round 3:

I actually use the bonnet view when driving, but thought that the cockpit view for a replay would be best to show off the revs, gears and steering.

Using the wheel (Logitech Driving Force Pro) does certainly help - but it does mean I can't really just pick it up for a few minutes, the effort to set it up means I need to spend at least a couple of hours on the games (which until this thread, and a purpose, I haven't!)

But - at the end of the day, this thread is mainly a reason to get us using our PCs, playing the games, and enjoying ourselves - whether that's getting the quickest time or the slowest time, providing you're having fun, that's the main thing! :)

I had time to have another go this morning.

My new PB 2:56.158

Still not quite enough though.
Nice time Confused, nice videos too.

Tim I don't know how much time you spend on racing games, but I do think you would find it a lot easier and more enjoyable using a wheel.
Like Confused said though, if you haven't got a dedicated space for a wheel, it can be a pain to setup.

Nice time Deluxe - I found it quite difficult to break the 3:00 barrier, but then within a relatively short space of time I'd dropped nearly 5 seconds!

I'm guessing that it's my turn to pick another track/car combo?

With the assists we've got enabled (mainly Stability Control), my previous choice of a high-power RWD beast didn't turn out quite as tail-happy and spinny as I'd hoped! So, why not play to the strengths next?

We've had Norway, Finland and Michigan - why not move the world tour onto:

Kenya - Wundanyi Climb
Class: Open
Car: Lancer Evo X

How does that sit with everyone? It should be a sub-2 minute time, so for the same amount of time investment you can get 50% more runs to post a time?

i would love to have a wheel with force feedback, looks like it gives you an edge, but space and also time spent playing racing games i can't justify it. Plus if i did get one i would have to bulid some kind of cockpit to sit in, which means more space ;-)

the course selection is ok with me, had a few runs will post times soon.

I may start posting a few of my times now that I've got a gamepad to play Dirt 3 with.

Also, what does the 'Stability control' assist do? Just stop you spinning out as easily? I normally play with it turned off anyway, but looks like a few people here play with it turned on.

It does seem to "numb" down the snappy tail-happy nature of some of the cars - I tried the Sierra without Stability Control and it was... interesting!

But - it was decided that we'll all use the same assists so it's a level playing field for everyone. Maybe, given enough interest, we'll amend the assists for a future round?

I'd personally quite like the challenge of a high power RWD car with no assists on a loose surface like snow or gravel! :)
