Hi guys,

As you can see I have an ancient system but the graphics card is almost permanently showing a critical core power fault (LED). Underclocking doesnt fix this issue.

I'm looking for a dirt cheap replacement and have been looking at an R7 240 2048 MB card, would this be a good replacement?

I really don't want to spend more than about £50

To be honest if a suitable replacement costs too much I'll probably junk the whole system and go games console, I cant afford to upgrade the whole thing at this stage of life.

My motherboard is PCIe 2.0 iirc, no idea if I can even get hold of a replacement

As long as its pcie you are fine with any gpu, second hand GTX 285 could be good and faster than ur 4870, they cost around £25

A R7 240 will realistically be a bit slower than the 4870, to get something new reasonably on par you would be looking at the R7 250 @ £65

2nd Hand I think you will struggle to get a 7850 for £50, so suggest looking at something like a 7770 or even previous gen cards such as 6870 or 5850.

Toms GPU Hierarchy can be a good (albeit very rough) guide to how cards of different generations and range compare:

All good stuff guys thank you, was looking around and thinking I may have to push it to around the £80 mark

Try looking for a 7950/7970 for that price. Still can handle most new games on high/ultra settings.

Maybe in the MM you might get one for £80, but on the auction site or anywhere else they are still over £100, £80 would get you a 7850 if you are lucky
