Dirt Rally in 3D

Hello

Its been a while since I bought any pc components. I bought a ps4 some time ago but noticed I rarely play it.

The only 2 games im interested in are Dirt Rally and PES 2017. PES is easy to run so doesnt need any sophisticated graphics card but for Dirt Rally I am really tempted to try it out on my 4k 3D Tv (i double checked it does support 3840x2160p in 3d mode up to 60fps). Its a non HDR tv (not 10bit panel) though.

Is there any decently priced card (i dont mind a used card) that could comfortably play dirt rally in 3d? My budget is approx how much I can sell my ps4 for so say around 150pds?

Ok Maybe not at 4k 3d if thats a stretch (which it likely is) at that budget but how about 3d at 1080p? I know the game is wicked in VR but cant buy the gear for that yet.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

3D is a naff gimmick that certainly isn't worth getting a GPU to specifically run one game in 3D

It never really took off, hence why very few 2017 TV's even have 3D capability.

I'm after that additional feeling of depth and immersion which will bring more realism to Dirt Rally. Coupled with a wheel I think it would be very fun and actually make the game easier e.g. can see how far the turning really is. Years ago I tried out Richard burns rally using some forced 3d graphics driver and the coloured glasses and it did make it an even better game.

Just cant justify spending loads on a VR gear which would be the ultimate so thought to try and find a decent graphics card. Any suggestions?

Running Dirt Rally in 4k needs quite a bit of oomph so really a980ti or 1070 is the minimum for 4k Dirt rally and even then you'll need to adjust the settings quite a bit to maintain 60 fps

If dropping some settings isn't an issue for you I'm sure an 8gb 580 or 6gb 1060 would suffice though,

I just got the white 6gb Asus 1060 which is on offer with both the Dawn of War 3 and Rocket league games for free, It runs Dirt rally okay at 3440x1440 so it should manage 4k/60 with the right settings.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So as suspected 3d at 4k is out of the question using those or any budget cards. Would 1080p 3d work well though?

Is there any slightly better card that could run Dirt Rally in 4k non-3d with most settings to high and 60fps?

I'm not saying it's out of the question, it'll just need some settings to be lowered, The edit above is an option too.

Your budget is also an unknown so if you have one look at whats available in it.

My budget is around £150, could potentially go slightly higher but would rather keep it at that price range hence open to used cards.

It's been so long I didn't realise cards with 8gb ram had become so readily and relatively cheaply available.

Isn't running anything in 3d the equivalent of pushing twice the number of images so doing 4k 3d needs something way more powerful or drop all settings to low?

Yeah but PSVR is £350. If I can get a decent gfx card for £150ish (used is fine) I can then buy the steering wheel + pedal set with the balance and have a decent setup.

But only in 3D, which is frankly, crap.

What TV do you have? I think you'll need an AMD card to use HD3D (Nvidia vision doesn't work with TVs) and unless you have HDMI 2.0 you will only get 720p 3D at 60hz or 1080p 3D at 30hz

Not true, nvidia have 3dtvplay. For AMD you would also need tridef. And iirc they both support 120hz via 1.4a.

That's literally not possible as HDMI 1.4b added 3D at 120fps.

1.4a is limited to:
720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24,
side-by-side horizontal at either 1080i50 or 1080i60
top-and-bottom at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24.

I wasn't aware of Nvidia 3DTV Play, but a quick google suggests they never updated it for HDMI 2.0 so you would never get 4K 3D.

HD3D is basically Tridef.

I agree 3d overall was overhyped and it was obviously going to fail.

However, I personally believe it makes car games paired with a proper steering wheel setup more enjoyable, at least for me, given the time I had on Richard burns rally which has really bad graphics and that was a forced third party 3d driver.

Ive got a Samsung JU7000 (is it even 4k or is this UHD? :s). The user manual specifies it supports the following 3D resolutions over HDMI:

Resolution Frequency (Hz)

1280 x 720p 50 / 60

1920 x 1080i 50 / 60

1920 x 1080p 24 / 25 / 30 / 50 / 60

3840 x 2160p 24 / 25 / 30 / 50 / 60

I'm sure the TV has the necessary HDMI connection. But I see you are saying I need to make sure the card has the proper output port?

I thought only NVidia had 3d but I've been away for a very long time so good to see AMD also an option.

Any other card suggestions? Looking at the price of 980ti and 1070 no wonder you advised me to shelve the idea and just save up for PSVR...

So AMD cards then?

Well the good news is that your TV has HDMI 2.0.

The bad news is that since HD3D and Nvidia 3DTV Play look like they aren't really being supported now, it's hard to find how they work on newer cards with HDMI 2.0 ports.

That will be anything from the Nvidia 960/970/980GTX upwards and AMD 470/480 upwards.

4k and 150 isnt going to do it.dirt rally at 4k and a 1070 gtx wont comfortably do it.so you would need to get a 1080 minimum to get 60 fps constant.
