Dirt Rally in 3D

I've played some racing games in 3D and I think it works really well, yeah it's a gimmick and will be replaced by VR, but racing games do benefit from the added depth...My old 980GTX did a good job on older games in 3D at 1440p, 4K 3D is a different matter...

Leaving 3d to one side for now. Which of these would be better for Dirt Rally in 4k?

Gtx 780 6gb
Gtx 970
Gtx 1050 ti

Oh and my system Ram is only 4gb paired with an i5 sandybridge 2500k or 2600k (cant remember sorry its boxed away atm). Will the ram be a bottleneck? I think cpu is still ok or am i wrong?

So I ended up picking up a used 980 ti at a decent price. Spent ages finding any card at a good price given the sudden price increases due to the mining craze.

I've seen a video on youtube of someone playing dirt rally at 4k 60fps solid with the 980 ti. Most settings at the highest level. Of course some settings were toned down and fps dropped in rain and some tracks.

However he had a much newer CPU and 16GB of RAM. I'm going to assemble the PC this weekend and give it a shot. Hopefully my i5 2500k and 4gb ram don't bottleneck performance by too much. I have never overclocked my cpu as its in a mini-itx sg07 case although with a large aftermarket heatsink so could be room to overclock it slightly. Ram I'm not too keen on spending approx. 100 to upgrade it so hopefully the 4gb ram is enough for a while longer.

As for 3d, have lost motivation for it lol, but might tinker with it once I have everything set up. probably at 1080p or even 720p to hit 120hz or is fps the correct term?!

You need at least as much system ram as vram to be able to make use of it, so with a 6gb gpu you want at least 8gb

Overclocked 2500k will also start to bottleneck a 980ti, maybe less so at 4k but will be something to watch out for

Oh, I had no idea about the system RAM needing to match or exceed the vram. Thanks for letting me know! Seems I will need to upgrade my RAM. Likely a daft question but I have seen 1x16gb stick going for about £50 used and 2x4gb for similar price also used. Is Dual Channel really that much better that 2x4gb would be better than 1x16gb? Just thinking I might be able to score another 1x16gb later on and get to 32gb RAM (overkill but great to have the option) although might be tough to get the exact same 16gb stick to pair it with.

On the 2500k, why would it bottleneck less at 4k than other (lower) resolutions? Not doubting you just curious as to the reason..in my head 4k is tougher to push so bottleneck would be more at that res? Thanks!

Thanks mate appreciate it.

As for the RAM i did abit of research and found that 2 sticks of RAM performs about 15% better than a single stick of the same total capacity. So 2x4gb is better than 1x8gb. However 1x16gb will still be better than 2x4gb so I have ordered the 1x16gb stick. Might also try leave 1x2gb in the other slot giving me total 18gb ram which even if it downclocks because of mismatching speeds or whatever would be better than 2x4gb. Plus I'll have a spare 2gb stick lying aroung in case any of the ones installed fails. :)
