i have a pc at work with windows xp and i have a problem with the f1 hotkey, it seems f1 is a hotkey for the help section in xp, theres an application i use at work where the f1 key is used a lot and each time i press it this bring up the help box for that application and this is time consuming and very annoying,

the I.T department say theres nothing can be done about this, i just thought i would ask on here to see if anyone knew a fix for this

is there any way to disable the f1 hotkey in windows xp

Well when you press F1 it launches the windows programme HELPCTR.EXE. Now under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\HELPCTR.EXE, points to where the file is located. (thanks google)

Now I've tried deleting it, but it just comes up with an error when you press F1. The only way to get past this is writing a blank programme. In other words a programme that just closes when run. Plug that into the registry and you done.

hi thanks for the help and trying that out for me, im afraid writing a blank program is beyond by capabilities, would anyone have one they could send me.

many thanks

I've uploaded it [not]here

This programme does nothing, well it opens the exits.
The only programming language I know is Java, this was written in C, but then again it does nothing.

thankyou very much :)

the registry wont allow me to import your file as its not a registry file

so should i rename that file 'helpctr.exe' and use to to replace the original helpctr.exe file below

C:windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe

many thanks

It worked for me, maybe a typo? (or could be something to do with policies or some rubbish like that). But that will surely work provided you've kept the same key.
