Disabling DHCP for LAN game?

Try setting static IP addresses on the computers you want to play on.

Open your network adapters settings, go into the TCP/IP settings and set an IP. Just make sure it's in the same network (e.g. if DHCP is using 192.168.1.xx then make sure you use e.g. 192.168.1.5) and make sure you set a DNS server and a gateway (these both should be 192.168.1.1)

what router is it ?

also want to reserve the static i.p so its not used by people still using dhcp as you'll get a duplicate i.p on the network

You don't always need to reserve a static IP. With my router it'll automatically take static IPs out of the DHCP pool :)

When the DHCP server is turned off, the Windows machines won't be given an IP address so they automatically give themselves one in the 169.254.X.X network. All the machines on the same LAN will see each other but they will have no gateway entry for connecting to other networks, even if your router did handle that network, so they won't be able to connect to the internet.

Don't know about AOE but maybe because the machines can't see the internet allows you to play a LAN game.

If you use 192.168.1.x for DHCP assigned and 192.168.0.x for static IPs then you _should_ be able to play AoE using the static range and people still get internet access fine... and if you set your DNS/gateway server up to your router IP you should still have internet yourself.
