Disabling multi monitor mode when second screen is disconnected

I currently have a 24" screen as my main monitor (via DVI) and a 32" TV (via HDMI) which I would like to use as a secondary monitor on occasion. Everything is working correctly using Catalyst Control Centre however I have one question.

The computer will try to use the TV as a second screen even when the TV is switched off or using another source. I would like it so the computer will only try to use the TV when the TV is A) switched on and B) on the right source. I find it rather annoying when I keep moving the mouse off the screen trying to grab at things on the right of the screen when the TV isn't in use. Otherwise I keep having to enable/disable it manually.

Is this possible?

Thank you in advance.

You need to have the TV enabled in Windows and the monitor at same time. Then right click on desktop - select "Screen Resolution". There's an option there something like "Show Desktop on screen1 / screen2 only" - It might be slightly different on Win7. Selected the option corresponding to monitor only. That should switch off singnal to the TV. You need to re-enable it again if you want the TV as a desktop extension again.

Edit: Didn't read it properly - seems you're doing that already. Dunno then, if my TV is off Windows detects it as off and doesn't extend the desktop. But if the TV is on but using a different source Windows thinks it's available as a desktop extension.

I have a HDMI switch on my desk for this, right next to my monitor, when i want to use the TV as my second monitor i just press the switch, i was having the same problem as you, only cost a few quid from a well known auction site and did the trick. I don't know if theres a software solution for it, but i'de like to know if there is.

I have been having the same problem, I think AMD cards prioritise HDMI output over DVI. As on startup my TV displays the windows logo but when I am in Windows my monitor is the main screen. I don't know I got confused that it wasn't simple like it should be. Did a google search and found out that someone else had the same problem but their was no solution.

I seem to be a bit of a stuck record on this one but have you tried the Winkey and P shortcut that allows you to turn on and off secondary displays?
That way, you keep it off and just hold the winkey and press P to turn on the second display.

This would be more convenient than doing it in CCC but sadly it tries to use the TV as the main screen every time I tell it to use one screen only. It will always identify the TV as monitor "1" no matter where I position them.
