disabling router part of modem/router

hi all,

i have a netgear dgn1000 router, which has been giving me random problems with steam. i also have a linksys wrt610n, which when i was on virgin was top notch, and has the feature set i need for my network. at the moment, i'm forced to use the netgear as we have BT adsl. what i want to do is disable the router-side of the netgear and use the linksys instead; is this possible?

Taken from another forum.

"Tips: To change the DGN1000 to modem mode, use http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm and selecting 'Modem only'
You may also need to change multiplexing to LLC, I can't remember whether I did this but I have read that you do, not very helpful I know.
Select 'Connect using PPPoE' on the AEBS and put your ISPs username and password in."
 
Set it to modem mode, aka bridge mode as described above.
I have a very similar setup with my BeBoxIII doing modem duties and WRT320N doing the NAT/DHCP. Works very well indeed.
 
right, hit a stumbling block; with the bt homehub, and the netgear you don't put in a password for BT, just the username of[email protected]. now, on my linksys it won't accept the details with it set to pppoe, it says i have to use a password :confused:

i've tried using things like % and # but it still won't give me net access, even though in the status page it claims its connected to the net...
 
I'd be fairly sure there's a password, if there's no password then there needn't be a username. PPP authentication usually employs PAP or CHAP PAP just requires a password, CHAP requires username and password.
 
i'm just going on what i found when i i moved from the homehub to the netgear, i just put the email address-style username in and that was it

There is no password.

Try entering any random string. That is what I did to get my Asus router working with BTInfinity.
 
ok, i'll give that a try.

few other questions:

do i have to plug the ethernet cable into a specific port on the netgear?

i'm tempted to put dd-wrt on my linksys, not sure of the version number though - anyone know how to find out?

so now, if i revert back to my original setup of having the netgear serving me internet access, and having my linksys as a second network for my pc, mac and media server to fileshare, if i have both ethernet cables plugged into my pc, i lose net connection... this is driving me mad!

Apologies for digging up an old thread, but I'm having problems with a similar setup: use Netgear DGN 1000 as modem only with an Asus RT-N56U providing router functionality.

I've put the Netgear into modem only mode using the link in the second post, connected the Asus router via a standard ethernet from its WAN port to port 1 on the Netgear and entered my ISPs details (Orange) in the PPPoE settings on the Asus.

The Asus says its successfully been allocated a WAN IP and retrieved remote DNS details, but cannot connect to these servers nor any other address on the internet.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?
