just upgraded to a BFG OC1 8800GTS 320mb from a X800 256mb and not been too impressed so far

have been playing STALKER maxed out, not much difference really from the settings I have been playing with the x800

3dmark05 with all bits turned on - circa 13k

am i missing something with these cards?

Theres not a lot of stuff out at the moment, if any, that makes proper and full use of the 8800 / 2900 XT range, but come September I can imagine a very large increase in performance over anything else, ie. your old x800! Kinda why a lot of people suggest waiting until later this year when more and more DX10 games appear on the market before upgrading, plus due to the new range of cards out near the end of the year from AMD/ATi and Nvidia. But yeah, going from a X800 to a 8800 GTS should have showed a sustansional increase in gaming performance...

I know this sounds daft but have you actually changed the settings in stalker?

It looks brilliant on my 8800GTS and is a MASSIVE step up from my previous 7600GT (which can be classed as slightly quicker than a X800)

13k in 05 is quite low although this can be contributed to cpu limitation.

Stalker is an awful game to compare card performance with as it's so horribly coded, it might as well be an awful console port. As for your 3D Mark score, as the user above me mentioned, the problem could be your CPU but you didn't tell us what you're using.

i thought the 13k was possibly low but i put not getting 15k in 3dmark05 to not running c2d setup

running:
amd 64 x2 4600 @ stock
2gb ram
win xp

i have put all the sliders up and set full dynamic lighting, the sky looks better as does the night scenes but the day still looks not too far different in STALKER - i have noticed a difference suppose it was not as much as i expected... :o granted i could not run STALKER at these settings with the x800 but the difference does not appear to be that much...

suppose i need to try some more games out...

Yup for a quick comparison I scored 13.4k (ish) with my BFG OC 8800GTS 320mb when my E4300 was at 2.4ghz, now at 3ghz I score 15.8k

(Same clocks on the GPU).

As for stalker I missed that you were running maxxed vs maxxed however I would say if you were running it with maxxed settings before then the visual difference would be minimal however the game should be much much much more playable.

i know this could be a longshot but what psu do you have, sometimes not having
a psu that can handle your components will not be sending enough power, i found this out a while back and ruined a perfectly stable asus motherboard, cost me £40 though so wasnt much of a problem.

Your cpu limited...

I was only getting 13k in 3dmark05 with my 8800gtx and AMD CPU..

Now i upgraded to a overclocked C2D 6600 cpu am getting over 19k in 3dmark05

cheers for the validation

re STALKER settings, not running max vs max strictly, could not run dynamic lighting and play competently, can now

guess I need to widen the gaming titles to do a proper comparison

plus point is that i can now run pixel shader 3 and 4 games now

When it comes to Stalker that's a huge difference. Dynamic lighting can slash your framerate by up to two thirds, more for some people, because it's such a horribly optimised catastrophe of a game.

Definitely. Try something like F.E.A.R. or Oblivion. :)

Sounds like what you're saying is you've turned up settings in Stalker and are not seeing much visual difference. That's just down to the game. You don't always get a massive visual difference from running games on high settings. It varies from game to game. What a faster card should give you though is a framerate increase, and the ability to run the game with as good a framerate on higher settings, but it's not going to magically make a game look hugely different if that's what you were expecting.

For reference 8800 GTS is over twice as quick as a X800 XT -

i run stalker quite high with an x800 pro and 3gb ram 4400+ x2

quite smooth to

I guess its the dynamic lights that kill performance then, surely the X800 cant run it with dynamic lights, withought that my fps in stalker is hardly ever below 60 and going up to 200+ in some places, just as soon as I enable dynamic lights, my cpu starts to struggle and my ram is low.

i went from a 7900gt to my 8800 and im a happy bunny (although i did upgrade everything else aswell) :D what drivers are you using?

Who? Me? If so, then I am using 158.27 drivers which can be found on Guru3D I think.

What res are you playing at? I went from Sli 7800gt's to a Superclocked EVGA 8800gts 320mb and even i noticed a big difference. Did you use Driver Cleaner to get rid of all traces of your old ATI drivers?
