Thats pathetic FPS aint it? you got 16xAA/AF or something? If its 38fps for you, whats it gonna be like on the exact same spec system with an 8800GTS :o

considering FSAA doesnt work in stalker...no i dont have it on:p

not sure how a lower res will hamper performance, if anything the card should be able to cut through it better?
Nuh uh. The problem is that newer, more powerful graphics cards are so good at pushing pixels and shaders that if you want to stretch their legs at all you're going to have to turn the resolution and AA/AF up.

don't really agree that the x2 4600+ and 2gb of ram are akin to a skodaesque computing experience, now if I was running a socket A then you might be able to use that metaphor... :p
Okay, it was a horribly exaggerated metaphor, but it did make my point. :p Pretty much anything other than a highly-overclocked Core 2 Duo/Quad is going to bottleneck an 8800 Series card to hell and back at 1024x768.

If you overclock your CPU as high as you possibly can and pile on some antialiasing/anisotropic filtering then you should see benefits, not really in terms of higher framerates but much better visuals and more consistent performance.

@ OP: Did you do a full reinstall from ATi to Nvidia driver? I mean uninstall ATI Catalyst - boot into safe mode to run driver cleander - install new card - boot into windows install Nvidia?

Like you said you need to run more games to see the difference, STALKER with full dynamic lighting & everything max out REALLY kills performance so I'm not surprised if you are getting similar frame rates.

A 8800GTS at 1024x768 is a complete waste. You really need a bigger screen with higher res to get the best out of these cards. I was wondering how you could run games maxxed out on your old X800 card. Give it a decent res to play at and turn up the details and watch your X800 get left in it's wake.

I know people like to hate on Stalker for being unoptimised, but it was such a forward thinking game. The use of Deferred shading allows that engine (When dynamic lighting is on) to cast literally hundreds of real time shadows (everything looks spectacular in a lightning storm). The only thing letting down the graphics are the old textures and old (and crappy) models.

Deferred shading can't handle transparency very well either, which is odd since this game has lots of transparent things (Just don't expect to see SSS in this game :P).

The lighting and shadow effects in this game are some of the most advanced, it just doesn't show them off very well.

*The best part to see the lighting/shadow effects are when you see the Flame anomalies - you can literally set all of them off at once and still have the same (poor :P) performance - this is because deferred shading allows for LOTS of post process effects.
