Hi there guys.
My little brother is getting a laptop for the first time this week and my parents want me to set-up some software on it to monitor what websites he goes on and so forth. Unfortunately he is very IT literate and knows how to delete cookies and history already, apparently they do it in school all the time.
So, spec me some free and very discreet monitoring software please guys?

Would it not be better to put parental controls on it? Because he is going to go on sites he shouldn't, it's only natural, your parents will know about it, then they will have to confront him and he'll find out about it anyway, but then he'll think they are spying on him and they won't trust each other etc etc.

At least with parental controls it's upfront and honest, I don't think spying is ever going to turn out well IMO.

He's far to clever for that - he'll know how to disable it easily.
Had this discussion with parents and they insist upon him not knowing about it.

No he wont, setup a user account restricted with parental software, and don't give him the admin password.
Else install a keylogger, and his itwithin startup with a randm naming process.
Means you have to g t t every so often to download the logs then check them.

Discrete monitorng can only be used to catch him once, once confronted he will know it is there, and that'll be that.

Thing is I think they want to give him a chance of not having any software on there to see whether he can be trusted, then they said if anything fishy popped up they would then install parental control software.

That's not exactly trusting is it? How are they going to know if anything fishy pops up?

Whatever you do, he'll be able to get around it. Whether it's disabling any parental controls, making a new user, using a proxy, etc etc.

How old is he btw and what are they worried about him doing? Naughty torrents? Pronz?

He's 13, and yeh both of those things really.
I'll take a good look at OpenDNS laters cheers, any other solutions welcome :)
