Dishwasher is causing top items to not clean properly.
Particularly the edges/corners.

They come out with a gritty (probably dried food) residue. Particularly on the outside and top of glasses and mugs.

Ive cleaned the easy to access filter
Cleaned out the arms..

But this really feels like a top arm problem.
Like the top arm is either blocked or not pressured enough

Any ideas?

We've found recently that the teflon frying pans are leaving a residue on all the cutlery and dishes etc and when we fill a glass up with water there's a smell.

I'm not saying it's your teflon pans but maybe look at what's going in the wash. Another option is to run a rinse first once it's loaded up and then clean the filter.

Do you use any type of rinse aid or dishwasher salt ?

Salt yes.
Rinse aid no.

The pans aren't Teflon. And it's very localised residue

What make is your DW?

Hotpoint

I feel its a water pressure issue or something like that. Faulty pump?

Is your dishwasher over 12 years old?
If so the older Hotpoint dishwashers have a rubber seal ring nut where the back of the upper spray arm assembly pushes into when drawer is pushed back.
The seal wears so water just comes out the sides instead of down the tube to the spray arm. Easy to replace.

Make sure the spinny thing isnt getting blocked from rotating all the way around.
Yeah sound silly but in a shared flat I swear this problem happened all the time. Turned out to be very daft, and it was a simple spoon we regularly used that was tall enough to stop the top spinny spinny from doing the roundy.

Out of habit i tend to spin the arm just before setting a program to make sure it's got free clearance. As you say, the space can be a bit deceiving, and before you know it, the arm is bumping into something.

Problem sounds very familiar to what happened with our new dish washer and as others have said, make sure the top arm is able to spin. Our top rack was set too low and the plates would stop the top arm from spinning. Everything on the top rack came out with gritty residue on it.

Ah, this too. My Hotpoint integrated has this pretty poor plastic button situation where it is pretty unclear when it has "dropped down" again. A bit annoying.

I can't wait to see the outcome of this.

Will it be a simple fix of something blocking the spinney whirly thing, will be be something as sinister as a blocked twirly whirly thing requiring unblocking with a cocktail stick or will it be a devistating blow of a broken seal.

Please update ASAP.

echo peoples thoughts

check seal at back, I think many have a seal that is made by pushing in the top tray and it can catch/wear
filters
top arm clipping plates etc below (i always give mine a spin as I am ready to start it),otehr half doesnt and most failures come on her watch ;)
most spray arms are just a simple twist to remove so easy to check, turn upside down run under teh tap

So this appears to be working now (I think)

Unfortunately like the bad scientist I am I changed a number of things in one go.

Changed tablet brand.
Moved from eco to normal wash cycle.
Cleared arms
Make sure the top tray is firmly pushed back.
Water was hot.
Arms definitely spinning (checked mid cycle.

I believe when I first cleared the arms the tray may have dropped and caught on stuff. So I didn't think the arm clearing worked.

I also manually washed (eww) the baked on dirt off.

So in end it was probably mostly the arms being blocked with rice. (couple of holes )
I'll keep on 'normal' wash for a little while.

I still don't think it's quite as good as new but the silt seems to be going

Sorry I may have missed the part you were washing on Eco.

I started doing our washes overnight with Eco and after a few weeks the dishwasher stank and the wash whilst not leaving grit didn't clean great.

Went back to using the 30min 60 degree or 70 degree 2.5hr wash and no more smells and clean dishes again...I wonder if trying to save the planet is a false economy as you end up.washing more!

Ill try and go back to eco later. It has been years using it. But I'll give it a while on normal . The eco cycle is longer and cooler. But yea . It's probably just saving penises not pounds .
