Had this problem on and off for a while now but it's got to the point where it's really irritating me and makes me want to throw the thing out on the street.

After a cycle is complete, the dishes smell fine, but after a while whether they are left in or out the dishwasher (in the cupboard or draining board) they end up smelling like wet dog.

Everything I can get to is clean, the filters, arms and sump all look fine, I have also ran bleach through it but the smell is still there, any ideas or should I just stop using it and wash stuff by hand?

If you've cleaned everything in the machine and run bleach/dishwasher cleaning stuff through, the only thing I can think of is that maybe the water inlet has somehow become partially clogged with something nasty? Not sure how that would have happened, but might be worth replacing the inlet hose/cleaning the hose out before replacing the whole machine.

Where is the outlet pipe run ? into the drain and outside or connected under the sink ?

If it is running into the trap under the sink the washer outlet pipe needs to be higher than the waste pipe so no dirty water can run back down into the washer as the smell obviously comes from dirty water and not fresh water.. the other obvious one is a blocked filter in the washer..

1) Do an empty cycle with detergent in to clean it
2) Clean all the seals around the door
3) Make sure the waste pipe isn't just running flat along the floor behind the dishwasher
4) Make sure the drain outside where the waste pipe empties into isn't blocked
5) Try rinse aid
6) See if it helps to open the door of the dishwasher immediately after the cycle finishes to let the steam out

Some stuff to try

If it were me, I'd use some distilled vinegar to clean everywhere inside the machine - seals, racks, walls, etc. Then use the rest of the bottle on the hottest cycle. Once the hottest cycle has finished, use a short but hot (60/90c) wash with baking soda.

After you've done the above, leave the door open for an hour or two.

Never EVER put washing up liquid. I did it once, never again. It was like a foam machine that I couldn't stop. I've no idea why I did it, but good god never again. :D
