disk boot failure and other problems

I first noticed the problem when windows refused to boot, repaired windows with the disk and it was then fine for a couple of weeks,

then the same happened again, I ordered a new hard drive as I assumed at this point it was faulty and was planning to replace it soon anyway as I was out of space.

I was using an XP install from my second hard drive temporarily while waiting for the new drive and the same happened to that.

This time instead of repairing i rebooted a few times and it worked ok.. since then i noticed a couple more related things.

one is that windows/programs can just freeze up totally randomly the mouse pointer still moves but can't click on anything this can freeze up anything from
1 - 30 minutes as though its at full load or something, but during this the hard drives are not spinning up at all.

the other thing i noticed is that during post one time when it didn't boot, the part where it lists the drives, It didn't pick up any of my 3 hdd's at all
and gives the DISK BOOT FAILURE error.

as this happens seemingly randomly i'm not sure what i can test. I have run check disk successfully without error and also it sometimes has the same
freezing problem.

I don't really have any compatible spares, only whats in the system.

Also i've not had the case open for a year or so or moved anything so everythings plugged in ok.

I'm assuming the motherboard is on its way out but just wanted some opinions before buying one.

Cheers

edit. update, when the drives aren't recognised during the boot error the dvd drive won't work either. (All SATA drives)

Have you tried the system with just the new HD plugged in?. (Unplugging all other sata devices Hds and DVD-RW)

One of the sata devices may be failing and causing the controller to hang.

Have you tried different SATA cables? I had a very similar issue recently and it was the cable causing the problems. Failing that, it does sound like the SATA controller/mobo side of things is having problems.

What hardware do you have? MOBO, CPU, GPU, Ram, PSU. How old?

Are you overclocking?

Cmos battery?

Does sound a bit like power though as has been suggested.
