Disk not being detected

I recently moved my old pc into a new machine, but know every now and then my hard drive is not being detected.

If I boot up and it cannot find it I turn the power off and boot again, it can then find it.

It is a IDE drive and I have tried it as master on the Primary controller and master on the second controller but the same thing happens.

Can anyone suggest a way around this intermittent fault?

try a different cable ? make sure the drive is set to master and not slave ?

As said check your cables.

What you could do is when it vanishes go to device manager and scan for hard ware changes to see if it finds it again, it did this with me for months before the drive finally went kaput.

Have a look in event viewer for error messages / codes.

good point, see if your BIOS supports SMART and turn it on if it isnt already
