Yep you read it right, hoovered my PC ( it's not the first time ) & when i switched it on i got DISK READ ERROR each time i switched it on. I went into BIOS and set everything to default , re started but still the same. Anyway after about 5 re starts later it boots into windows without a problem - wierd - what do you reckon happened there ?

I've not re booted yet so the same disc read error might occur next time i switch PC on, suppose i better start backing up all that vital stuff.

Did you check to make sure you didn't knock a cable or two when you hoovered? Check power and data cables to and from all devices :)

I'd have suspected that except that it started working spontaneously. Unless the OP resorted to the tried and tested method of bitch-slapping the computer when you don't understand what it's complaining about.

odd i use the vacuume cleaner in pc's all the time with no fried components.

must be just me then that keeps the pc power cord plugged into the pc to keep it earthed then.

Keeping the plug in while hoovering will help in disipating static electricity ......

It just depends if you get the charge going -> casing -> earth to plug
or
charge -> PC component -> earth to plug

I would use a soft brush to dust PCB's
For fans , I remove them and use compressed air on them along with a wipe with a cloth
For heatsinks I take them off and use compressed air to clean out the blades with the fan removed
All the while with the PC plugged into the wall socket with a modified plug that has only the earth wire connected , so you are not alone.

I`ve always hoovered my heatsink, keep it plugged in and touch the case. Last mobo I had developed random reboot behaviour, whether the hoover borked it or it just went bad I couldn`t say but I still hoover my heatsink from time to time.

Too lazy to take it off and if this mobo dies I`ll have an excuse to upgrade from socket a. mwahahahaaaa.

Gotta love the twisted logic. I'll wait until my mobo dies for an excuse to upgrade. Never mind that upgrading before the mobo dies means you get money from selling the mobo/have spare components :P

that sucks man. (whoops pun)
well hoovering inside your pc almost never works for around the components anyway, you always have a thin layer of dust left that just builds up more.
you can get compressed air in a can that works really well and in short bursts can minimise the static build up i guess.

Indeed.

Next we'll have a post from someone getting errors after washing their drive in the sink :p

on a sidenote, the motherboard, ram and cpu that fell into a sink of water (dog pushed it in) is still working solidly :) 3 weeks airing cupboard saved its life

You had PC components next to a sink of water? I've had pendrives through the wash that have been OK as long as they're FULLY dry before you try to use it again.

On a related note, where is the best place (if it's not a competitor) nowadays to get compressed air from? It tends to be very expensive in a lot of places, and OcUK don't seem to stock it.
