Hi guys,

It has taken almost an hour to copy 90gb of data from my 320Gb WD AAKS drive to my 500Gb WD AAKS drive.

Why is this?

25Mb/s, that's not too bad for a mix of file sizes. You'll only get the full potential speed if the files are large since there are fewer updates to the file tables.

I've just installed a sata drive in my pc and I am getting very slow speeds transfering files from my 500Gb Samsung Sata drive to my 1TB Samsung Sata drive in Windows XP.
The 500Gb is in my computer whereas the 1TB HDD is in my Tvix HD Player.
I have just transfered a 700MB file from my computer to my Tvix player in 16minutes. This is extremely long as before it took less than a minute form my 200Gb Seagate IDE HDD.
Any ideas what could be the cause of this?

what os?
what's running in the background? (av / defender / spyware scanner)
what interface are they both on?
what types of files are they?

files that will copy quickest are things like 700mb video files (unless they're mega fragmented)

If you are doing lots of small random files, then your avgerage transfer rate will drop. Try defrag your disks, if you are copying stuff around a lot.

Try like others have said, copy one large file and see what the straight line speed is. If its fast, u know its just because of small files/fragmentation etc.

i sugget you first test the drive out using hdtune, get it from here: http://www.hdtune.com/
and run the benchmark test and post the results up here. also check the SMART tab and post a screenshot up here if its a bit fishy.

but the benchmark will tell us if there is something wrong with the drive or the setup you have.

once you done that then we can move onwards with the fixes.

it was only since i installed the sata drives that i had problems. I've just reformated my drives and it's transfering files like a dream now! 90Gb/hr and more :D
