I joined the masses on monday and got a 360 started playing gears of war all was good until yesterday when i went to carry on, I get to end of the first act and it then turns round and says the disk is unreadable and i cant get past it after restarting the box and cleaning the disk.

I have checked the disk and there's no scratches or marks on it, Im a bit confused tbh

has anyone else had this before ? did you get a replacement disk ?

Have a look at the outer edge of the disc and see if there is a fine line all the way round it.
If there is you need a new disc.
This is normally caused by moving or knocking the console when playing the game.

If you're suffering from Disk Read Errors try deleting your profile (not you game saves, there's an option for this when deleting the profile) and then re-downloading it from xbox live.

Not sure why this works but it does. Worth a try at least since it worked for me :)

i had the exact same problem as you with ONLY gears of war. it happened to me half way through an FMV a few times and at the end of another FMV a couple of times. my game is not damaged either.

Did you ever get anything done about it Tauren ?

will try removing my profile later and see what happens

nah.. i just put it down to badly burnt data on the FMV's. as the game worked fine for hours on end without quitting, untill i hit a FMV. its annoying, because you know its coming as you hear the disk in the drive slowly spin down to a halt, lol.

This happens an awful lot on Oblivion too, but then that game accesses the disk more than any other I've found.

I don't think this is particularly a problem with the disk though (unless you can see scratches on it), it's more a problem with the XBox. Perhaps with the caching system since it's a known problematic area with 360s.

Seriously though, try removing and then re-downloading your profile (Don't remove your save games). It worked for me and a few people I've spoken to about this.

Are MS still offering replacement disks to people who's 360s are damaging their games?

Although I think it was only specific games that would be replaced if i remember correctly.

Do you have your 360 vertical? Almost guaranteed to have scratching problems if you have it that way up.

Had that happen a few times to me on various games on my previous RLOD xbox.

Makes you want to cry! lol

more like throw the thing out of the window. ive had that happen to me three times, in one gaming session which was only an hour long! only happens in GoW though... probably accessing the disk more :p

Lies.

The only way your're going to have scratching problems is by knocking or moving the console while a disc is spinning.

Well, I have my xbox horizontal so that isnt a problem. Plus, never gets moved.

Also just got splinter cell : DA , and it froze and had to turn it off!!!

PLEASE DONT DIE XBOX, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!! lol

My January 06 360 has always been vertical and not had any discs scratched, the one I got in June has been fine too and my Halo one is fine vertical so far.

My first two 360's had Samsung drives that liked to spin down perfectly fine discs in the middle of play, causing the "Unrecognised Disc, This disc is unreadable" error. The console would refuse to spin up the disc again until I eject and close. powering off and on worked too I think...
Never had the issue with my current Premium and Elite with Hitachi drives *touches wood*

Do check if your drives are Samsung, just pop to 360drives.com, theres a guide there :)
