Supposedly it happens on modern cars as they are valuable. Or it could be propaganda from the steering lock manufacturers

There seem to be plenty of links saying that it happens, and not all by steering lock manufacturers even though - understandably - some are, as it is a selling point for their product.

Don't think the E39 has a red flashing LED anywhere, unless the nose thing on the rear view mirror flashes.
