Display Driver has stopped responding!!!

try different drivers.....what ones are you using? 11.? i had this with my 5970 for a while till they fixed the driver...amd are legendary for it mate

try 11.2 or 11.4 if its out.....this will sort it out for sure

just noticed afterburner....is your card overclocked? why not use ccc the ati overclock program? what card are you using?

It's not overclocked

mate you need to give me more info than this or it will take forever..:)
what card is it?...why would you have afterburner if your not overclocking?
anyway roll the driver back or forward one and you will find it will sort it....sometimes in fixing one problem they create another(ati drivers)

i was told that afterburner would fix it. What should I get instead?

how do I shift it up or down one?

He's told you about 3 times now. Uninstall afterburner and just use CCC that comes from ATI. Like mentioned, it's notorious for this too happen. I got it all the time on my old 3870, think it was just faulty because nothing fixed it over 2 years. My 6970 does it occasionally if I don't up the fan speed, but that is overclocked and I know that's the cause of the problem.

Get rid of afterburner. Update to latest drivers.

afterburner is an overclocking program...if you dont plan to overclcok then you dont need it
go on amd site an download 11.4 if its there then just install it which will write over the one you already have...try it and see if the problem remains and let us know brooks

I think thats not good advice, you should clear old driver version first using a tool like driver sweeper as if there are remenants of the old version and that version was causing the issue it might not simply resolve with an overwrite if there are still registry entries

i agree with you and would generally do a fresh install when changing drivers but the drivers are designed to be writen over with the latest driver and many people do this with out issue....if the OP still had an issue after he had switched drivers then i would have recommended he did driver sweep first but he was obviously inexperienced and was unsure about changing drivers never mind using the mine field that can be driver sweep... so wynd your neck in cowboy...

ps i clearly stated "try it and see if the problem remains and let us know brooks" which is a work in progress

I have to agree. Drive sweep is usually only needed when switching from Nvidia to ATI or vice versa.

A fresh installation of the OS when updating drivers? Are you serious?

Create a restore point , uninstall the drivers, run DriverSweeper in Safe Mode, run Ccleaner, then install new in normal mode.

Any problems, you can always rollback the system to the check point you just created or back even further if you wish.

Indeed i am admiral.....I don't keep anything on my ssd apart from my operating system and nothing that can't be transferred to storage within 2 minutes so it takes an hour every couple of months...keeps it tip top and runs like a dream....

turn ur CCC OC down, i have the same probs with hd6970, unfortunatly not all cards are made equal, start at sliders two thirds up then move it up in increments until it stops working, then back down one notch. hope this helps:)
