display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Hey guys, just got the new parts i was reccomended, got it all setup wednesday, had a dodgy stick of ram which I have applied for an rma for.

So I bought a new set of the same mem which seems to be working fine (2x2gb OCZ that is/was on offer), so I'll just get a refund on the non working ones.

Anyway, I keep getting the error "display driver stopped responding and has recovered", quite frequently....not always when I am running a game either, but the screen goes black, then it comes back displaying that error.

What are the causes of this error? As I've never heard of it before.

Cheers

Mike

CPU idles around 34C ish, full load around mid 40's?

Graphics card is 55C full load, idle around 30-34C ish

Its started doing it more frequently in the last half hour, as soon as I try and open a game it freezes, black screen etc, it also crashed and restarted the computer a second ago.

I should also note I needed to increase Vdimm to get it to run, the board was defaulting at 1.5v, so I set it to 1.65V as stated on the sticks.

What else should I check?

Cheers

edit: just had 2 bsod as well...

Sounds like something not playing right, have you done bios update, windows update etc.

Might be a bad motherboard.

Well i just turned off Cool n Quiet in the bios and so far it hasn't done anything stupid.....dont know how long its going to last though

I haven't done any bios updates on it yet, do they have issues with the stock one? Windows is fully updated as well

Cheers for the help so far

Your kidding people right? CPU, Motherboard, Updates?

It's quite clearly a problem with the graphics card. ATI cards are terrible for this. I've had the error many a time with various ATI cards.

Run Furmark to test it for stability. Keep an eye on the temperature. Make sure the GPU isn't overclocked at all, which I presume it isn't.

Let me know how furmark goes? If it fails, then unfortunately you will have to RMA to the graphics card as well.

If you download, "bluescreenview" It will tell you the cause of the blue screens. Most likely related to the gpu.

I'll download those 2 apps now bud and let you know how I get on.

Ok, I ran the benchmark at my desktop resolution (1280x1024) fullscreen and it completed fine, 62C max temp

So I tried the burn test for 10mins or so and it didn't crash while running or anything, 68C max temp.

But the computer is far more stable with cool and quiet disabled, but it did black screen and give the display driver error when I pressed F1 for the help menu during the full screen burn test as I wasn't sure how to stop it.

What settings should I be using during the furmark stress testing?

Cheers

Fullscreen
Use the monitor's native resolution
8x MSAA
Dynamic Background
Burn-in
Xtreme burn-in

Let it run 10 mins or so keeping a CLOSE eye on GPU temps and GPU Vreg temps (if you can)

Ok, the 5850 struggled at 8x, 4x etc maxxing at about 8fps for 4x, but it ran no worrys for either for the few minutes i bothered, and was fine for 2x as well for the full 10mins.

So correct to assume the gfx card is/was not the issue?

No. "Display driver stopped responding." Is related to the graphics card. That just ruled out it's stability, nothing else.

I take it you are running the latest drivers from the ati website? Is it windows 7 you are running?

Yes mate windows 7, and the newest I could find on guru 3D. After those furmark tests I opened up eve online and it crashed again.

As for Bluescreen View, the last bsod I had was 2 hours ago and this is the information its displaying for it:

After a google, it appears corrupt file system file?

If that is the case, I think I can possibly explain that one myself. Feel free to tell me im talking rubbish:

* After building the pc, 1 stick of ram was fubar, so with the motherboard at stock settings I ran with one stick (1.5v vdimm probably as the mobo sets it) it ran ok

*installed windows etc, I was getting problems with files I had downloaded being corrupt and wouldn't install, tracked it down and solved with increasing Vdimm to 1.65v instead of letting the motherboard automatically set it

*various crashes but not very frequent

*new ram in today, both sticks in, 1.65v vdimm, lots of crashes

My theory, I installed the OS with a single undervolted stick of memory and perhaps the system files could be corrupt?

Cheers

edit: cheers for the name of this app btw, its fantastic

edit2: going to reinstall the OS and report back

I've got this suspicion its the memory.....maybe my ocz memory is just not a goer with this asus board perhaps? I remember back in the day certain boards just did not get on with certain brands of memory, anyone heard of any asus/ocz conflicts?

Cheers

You have the same suspicions as myself then. A quick 5-10 mins in memtest86+ will soon put our theories to the test.

You can run it from a flash drive or burn the iso onto a cd. I'd give that a shot.

With regards to the system file corruption. I was getting a tonne of blue screens a few weeks ago, I finally narrowed it down to my raid card I got. Sometimes the codes etc aren't always 100%. Google also told me I had system errors. I wouldn't bother reinstalling tbh, waste of time in this instance. Always a last resort.

Those were all related to a dodgy raid card. Nothing to do with USB or RAM as you might think.

I wouldn't use that to be honest. Download the latest memtest, that one will be well out of date.

Posting from my phone bud, downloaded the new version you linked, its been going 14 mins now still on test 7 no errors yet.

edit: I let it go to half an hour after it had completed all of the tests, I'm sure if it was the memory causing the crashing It would have shown up straight away?
