Display Driver Stopped Responding in GRID

Hi

I've been having some weird problems since installing my free copy of Grid (thanks OCUK :))

It plays perfectly well for about 20 minutes, maybe more then quickly locks up and stops responding... the Vista (64bit) message tells me that Grid.exe has stopped working, gives me some exception codes etc then goes back to the desktop (it gives me the option to 'search for a solution online' but I close the prog instead).

I then get a tray message that says ' Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered'.

I found a thread suggesting it was the drivers so I upgraded to 178.15 but it happened again. I also tried playing with the cover off the case (Lian Li with 3 fans running at 100%) but it still happens.

So, is my gfx card borked, or is the display res hurting it (1680 x 1050 Samsung 22") or.... what else?

Thanks for any help.

Ive only seen that when over clocking my cards .

I dont know for sure but grid might be a little heavy for a 8800gts/320 card .

Your probley running out of video memory .

I've tried the card with and without an overclock and it's the same result - I'd have thought it would be fairly easy on cards though, it's not exactly Crysis is it?

Surprised about the 4850 too, I was looking to that for my next upgrade :(

Even more so with the 4870, is the game just badly resolved?

Hope Far Cry2 is a bit better...

My system has done it a few times when loading crysis Warhead, its a gtx 260has 896mb of DDR3.

Hasn't done it since I went from 2gb to 4gb

It usually resolves it's self with a reboot though, I don't think its from running out of video ram as my system never did it with a 8800gt with 512mb.

Everything falls over from time to time.

Have you got Vista set to "disable desktop composition" when running games?Aero eats all your gpu ram and if you don't have much it will start eating your system ram:D

Not sure, where do I find the option?

Or maybe I should just disable Aero.... but it looks so pretty.............;)

Thought I'd download 3dmark06 and give it a go and it did exactly the same thing, although it didn't even start properly.

You sure your card is stable at its current clocks? See what atitool artifact scanner says.

Try looking here. Can give some ideas of possible fixes.

Ive had this problem with day one using a 4870x2 using GRID and Crysis and 3dmark 2005 (not tried 2006 yet). Cant get it fixed with any of the fixes so im hinking about taking it into a computer store to swap some components around to find the culprit.

Thanks, I'll give those a try later.

There's no artifacting during the game, it stops pretty quickly, but I'll try ati tool. Might try memtest too, just to be sure.

Thanks

Had a look at Eggman's link and none of it worked, now I can't even start grid - 'OpenAL32.dll was not found'

On the bright side, it's a different message.

Atitool next.

fixed this benlanky?

P.S. If you havent worked out already, OpenAL is just an app you need to install to run the game - u must have uninstalled it along the way somewhere. Google it if you havent done so.

Never had a vpu recover at all with my Sapphire 4870X2...
then again i have never encountered this vpu recover at all on this card so far 3 weeks ;) 800/960

no probs here! runs great at 60fps, btw is it limited to this? i hardly ever see it fluctuate from this number when running in game
