One of the really annoying things I've noticed in gmail is that it doesn't display images in emails unless senders are manually marked as trusted. Is there any way to fix this?

The settings page, change the setting under "External Content":

Yeah like I said you have to manually add senders to the trusted list. I want external content to always be displayed regardless like it does when I use an email client like outlook.

i think it's blocked by default to prevent spammers from knowing your address exists. if you view an image it will show on their server logs that you are real.

edit: just found confirmation of this....

I can't see images in a message

When you open new messages, some images may not appear immediately. Gmail disables images to protect you from unknown senders, like spammers, who use images and links to verify that your email address is real.

You can click the "show images" button at the top of the email. Then click the "Always show from this sender" and it will display them all the time for new emails as well

Utter stupidity. It's much more effort to add people to the trusted list than click the spam button.

It's not stupid at all. Clicking the spam button would only mark the sender as spam though, any images used for email/IP tracking etc will have already been downloaded.

And as above, you can just click the "Always show images from this sender" link the first time and then never worry about it again.

I've never had a problem with spam with the other providers who don't do this. Guess I'll have to find a decent email provider rather than crappy Gmail.

I have a brand new email address from outlook.com and it had spam within 24 hours and had never been used. You do not need to sign up for things to be spammed.

No you don't but a filter has always eliminated 100% of the spam for me with a few custom keywords. Far more convenient than having to click to display pictures and still getting spammed anyway.
