My new computer has a VGA, DVI and HDMI port but my existing monitor has a VGA DVI and Display Port. At the moment I have connected them with the VGA cable. Is there any advantage in buying a Display Port to HDMI adaptor and connecting them with a HDMI cable? Will I see any difference?

DP > DVI > VGA

Displayport is kind of the way most monitors and graphics cards are going these days. DVI is a little older and doesn't carry audio (if it needed to) but is also digital. VGA is a$$ and analogue so only use in a dire emergency.

I apparently cannot get HDMI to DP. All cables and adaptors I have found are the other way round DP to HDMI and are not bi directional. It looks like a DVI cable is the best option? No need to carry audio as I have speakers set up and I don't think the monitor has speakers anyway.

Looking at one right now on the rain forest, but I cant link it sorry.

I'm sceptical about how well that'll work. There would need to be some sort of active signal conversion.

OP - Just use a DVI cable. HDMI and DVI are the same display technology, HDMI adding audio and other consumer electronics features.

I'm still sceptical. We tried VGA to digital type converters at work (again active) for the conference rooms, and they generally had horrible image quality.
Sure, but thats analog to digital, this is digital to digital.

Not saying it will 100% work but the item has 4.3 stars, from 36 reviews

Worth a punt as long as you can return it, and there's no other sensible option. Amazon reviews for tech items are rampant with corruption. I take them with a massive pinch of salt.

I this case - use DVI.

Used a DP to HDMI, passive ones, as we Wiseman at Acer decided to launch not so long ago gamer monitors without DP. They got quite warm/hot during use. As I didn't adapted well to 2 displays, never used them again.
