Really hoping someone can help with this. Bought a pc from a friend at work yesterday and having a strange problem. When I first plugged it all in to my monitor, it worked fine at res 1024x768. I updated the new pc with my monitors display drivers so i could display at 1280x1024, that worked ok too. Then after a few minutes the screen went blank and I got a message saying the monitor could not display this resolution, even though I display at that res with my old system.

The only difference is that the new system has dvi input, the old was vga...and of course my old graphics card was a radeon 9800pro, my new card is 8800gt.

I eventually managed to get a semi-usable system by literally plugging and unplugging the dvi cable until it 'tripped' the monitor into displaying for a short while and change the res back down to 1024. However, it still intermittently tells me it can't display at 1280x1024 even though the display setting is at 1024x768.

I'm tempted to format the drive and do a full re-install of everything, just wondered if anyone had any ideas before i did that.

Oh yes, the monitor is a flatscreen dell 1907FP.

Thanks in advance.

Installed latest nvidia drivers but display went corrupt and into vga mode (4 colours), had to uninstall, do have the latest monitor drivers. Refresh rate is at 60hz, optimum for my monitor.

Put the Nvidia Driver EXE onto your desktop.
Boot into Safe mode.
Install it.
Restart and boot into Windows.

Before you do that, remove the current driver install.

Got fed up and did a fresh SP2 install, however once i did windows update and got sp3 installed, can no longer access the net...ARGH!!!
