So I've renewed my tax on my 330i today over the phone with DVLA, the car was previously SORN. The woman over the phone advised I could drive the car as I'd broken the SORN. Is this correct seems bizarre to drive around with no tax displayed at all, in my world anyway..

She double checked and I had to call back for one reason or another and another guy I got through to also confirmed that because it was a broken SORN it was acceptable not to display the disc, like I said it seems a bit strange they would let you do that

I think you have 14 days' grace period when the vehicle is taxed but the tax disk is not displayed because you haven't yet received it.

It certainly works this way with new cars, so I'd assume a broken SORN is the same situation.

I guess that's the case, fair enough they allow it but it does feel very strange not having a tax disc displayed

I could only un sorn over the phone as I had lost my V5 (don't ask) and simply couldn't get time to get to a post office because of my working hours

I think you're getting a bit worked up over nothing, I highly doubt the police check every single car for a tax disc, especially when they have ANPR cameras that do all the hardwork for them. If you do get pulled then just explain the situation, surely it will only take a few days for a tax disc to arrive... I know when you renew it they give you 5 days after expiry to display the new disc to allow for delivery times but confirm that you will be taxed during that period still.

No harm in making sure I'm well above board that's all. DVLA have said one thing Police websites don't seem to mention what they said hence confusion.
