So I've renewed my tax on my 330i today over the phone with DVLA, the car was previously SORN. The woman over the phone advised I could drive the car as I'd broken the SORN. Is this correct seems bizarre to drive around with no tax displayed at all, in my world anyway..

The only issue you will have is if the police see the car has no tax displayed. Any ANPR cameras will show the car is taxed so they wont stop you. If they do see no tax displayed, any checks will show the reason why.

I thought the offence was not showing valid tax, it doesn't actually matter if you've got tax or not.

She double checked and I had to call back for one reason or another and another guy I got through to also confirmed that because it was a broken SORN it was acceptable not to display the disc, like I said it seems a bit strange they would let you do that

I think you have 14 days' grace period when the vehicle is taxed but the tax disk is not displayed because you haven't yet received it.

It certainly works this way with new cars, so I'd assume a broken SORN is the same situation.

I guess that's the case, fair enough they allow it but it does feel very strange not having a tax disc displayed

There was some chatter a while ago (given the new databases) that we wouldn't need to display tax discs soon. I imagine it costs a fair whack to produce the discs

Taken off a Feds website

No, you haven't got 14 days grace to get a new tax disc when the old one runs out. If you have a tax disc already, you should make arrangements to re tax your car before the expiration date of your current tax disc. You can tax your vehicle on line, see website in related information for more details.

It is an offence to drive a vehicle on a road without displaying a valid tax disc. However, there is a 14 day exemption period given to the owner of a vehicle from displaying a valid tax disc (the exemption is not from having a tax disc, but from displaying one, you must purchase a tax disc):

- when a car is taxed at first registration

- where there is a change of keeper of a vehicle

- when an application for the renewal of a tax disc has been made before the expiry of the old one.

In addition to this where an application for a replacement tax disc made (current one lost or stolen), there is a period of exemption from displaying a valid tax disc. This period runs from the date when the application for the replacement is made and ends with the time when the replacement is obtained.

Irrespective of whether a car is used on a road the DVLA send out automatic penalty notices to anyone who has not renewed their tax disc outside of the exemption period (unless they have completed a Statutory Off Road Notice).

Ultimately you'll be fine and I wouldn't worry about it. The police have better things to check that if the tax disc is on your windscreen or if it has fallen off. Besides a check will show that the car is taxed.

Wish we didn't need to bother with tax discs anymore. They're so...ancient. Nowadays you can key in the plate and find out if a vehicle is taxed instantly.

Do you have the last tax disk used on the car? Can you just display that instead until the new one arrives?

I could only un sorn over the phone as I had lost my V5 (don't ask) and simply couldn't get time to get to a post office because of my working hours
