Dissertations - Uni

Managed 18,000 words for my Masters dissertation last summer.

Left the writeup until the last month. Managed a first for it.

Hmmmm Ok, so a bit of thread revival going on :p

Was just wondering how you are all getting on with your dissertations and if you guys have made any mroe progress :)

Got a structure planned, a list of references, and collated all my results to date... - the writing begins in earnest next week.

I met a student yesterday who is doing two here at Trinity, both in English as a subject and one of them is on the longest book written in the English language!

I did mine on spiders, way back when... :D

I've done nearly 4,000 words, bit lower than I planned to but I'll be making up for it over Easter as I've finished Uni for the term today.
Finally saw my tutor though :D I practically camped outside his office so he had no choice. So I know exactly what I'm doing and he seemed confident I was doing well.
I've done all the research (well except due to the subject content, new stuff comes out daily so I'm keeping an eye on that still), just a matter of putting it together.
The month off Uni will help, only be out 3 days a week for work then so I'll have a lot more time. Plus I've only got one other essay to write over Easter luckily.

That's weird - My disseratation had to be 12 words or less, and start "I like Chocolate Mock-Cocao SnackySnacks because . . ."

That was for my Gold Badge in Advertising and Marketing (Hons).

Ive got 8000 words to write for my 3rd year project. It's in on the 2nd May, and i can lift 1000 words straight from the interim report (background section) i submitted in january.

But i have 2x 1500 word essays worth 30% in total of a 20 credit module, 15 page lab write up about turbine blade broaching, another aerospas coursework, and a quantitative ******* courswork. They are mostly in around the 3rd-5th may, but the lab report is in first day back.

FUN FUN EASTER

Read the FAQ - No swearing.

I'm doing my dissertation on patterns*. Started writing it at about 3am this morning, for some reason - just chopping and changing it around a bit now. I still have something like six weeks to hand it in, so all should be well :)

* it's a serious essay, honest!

Im at about 4000 now, I'll have 16000 by the 24th april, I then have 4 weeks to turn 16000 words in to my 10,000 concise words, with good layout/structure/images etc. and then time to print and bind. I aim to submit a day early and then go in and help out others on final hand in day.

I'm on 7.5k out of 10k. Aiming to get 10k done by April. It's in on 26th April. Hmn.

Code:
Digital Cinema: An investigation into the adoption of digital technology to replace film distribution and exhibition in cinemas around the globe

I'm enjoying learning everything about it, but its a bitch to write!

Glad to see most of you are getting on ok :)

Probably some of the best advice I can give when doing ya dissertation is dont forget about the coursework for other modules :) Its easy to put all your eggs in one basket but they will all go rotten if you fail the other modules. So make sure that they all get done too :)

Its also an idea to set out other bits of coursework between now and when you finish in a similar way. Helps wonders with presentation and shockingly most people don't bother. So you stand out from the crowd a bit in terms of presentation :)

Finished one of my third year projects two weeks ago, ended up being 8000 words, completely unsupervised as my supervisor was a complete ****** ignored a dozen emails i sent him, and was never in his office, so i've no idea how that will go.

Now just the business of finishing off the lab work for my other project, and then writing that up, which should be interesting. That and the small matter of revising for my third year exams.

why did i choose to go to imperial......

Lol, does your second year count towards your final degree? If so count yourself lucky! I've got a whole 2 months before I graduate and I currently have 0% of my degree in the bag :( . Good luck though :).

20k word target here, written around 11k so far (all the research) and started on actual methodology write-up. Have also written around 6000 lines of code and the actual product itself is more or less finished.

Just trying to finish my other two reports for other two subjects then its back to the dissertation report....

good luck all :)

What's all this about 'Dissertations'? Don't tell me you gotta do a 10,000 word essay in Uni?!?!

well no, mines 20-25k.

I do 10k reports for my 9 other subjects (ish) as well as producing the actual application, which so far has included a distributed named service (bit like DNS) in Java.

An encrpytion algorithm of similar complexity to RSA in java.

A realtime pumping simulation system in labview.

Around 4 or 5 J2EE applications (RMI, EJB etc)

The production of a complex simulataneous system using the JSD design method (and a 5 year old CASE tool...)

... and of course my actual dissertation which is a C++ app which utilises OpenGL to display multivariate scientific datasets using 3-dimensional glyphs (if anyone is interested)

Im not trying to brag.. just trying to prove we actually do some work while we're here, contrary to popular belief...
