HankScorpio raised a good point in another thread about temperatures, which I thought would be useful to share our experiences.

For instance, my machine was at 67 C for each core and about 75 for the GPU before yesterday. Now it is at about 73-75 C for each core and 80 for the GPU.

I still believe this is within the safe temperature levels, but I'm not sure as to the upper limit for both CPU and GPU.

I haven't completely tweaked my overclock voltage yet so I may be able to bring it down a bit, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make on voltages.

We all tend to dial back a bit in the Summer, you will see a similar if less pronounced (due to aircon) drop in all teams in the US as well.

Two of my big crunchers are in an un-airconditioned room where, when you open the door it feels a bit like a sauna. Should really get an aircon unit in there

Just remember folks, ambient temps is everything, no matter whether you are air cooling or watercooling, you won’t be able to cool the components below the ambient temperature

Morning chaps :)

Apologies if you think i may be hijacking the thread but cooling in hot weather has posed me a few options i hope you could help me out with.
Currently i have one rig mobo is wc and 2 wc 480's over the next few weeks i am hoping to change systems and the new one will have 4 x wc cards probably 480's depending on what members market comes up with.
My main question is this, the rig is in a room 10ft x 6ft and positioned next to the window for some fresh air. i have 2 air conditioners and wondered which would be best to do/cheaper on electricity.
Should i keep the door/window closed for full cooling effect from the air con (heat exhaust tube will go through the wall into hallway) or would i be better getting a dedicated water chiller.
Would appreciate your thoughts chaps :)

Well the good news for me is that the ambient temperature in and around my rack is "bloomin Chilly" ... Infact if it gets much warmer outside i might have to arange for some kind of outage so i can go stand in a nice cold room for a while (thermal socks at the ready)

Yeah summer sucks for crunching. I tend to cut down on the gpus, i7 is at 75 at the moment so not too bad.

Hi Toxic - a water chiller is just another name for evaporative cooler, so the humidity will rise as you cool. On hot humid days the cooling effect will lessen, even with the window open. Having just turned on my portable a/c I would say you would be better with a/c exhausting through the wall. Keep door & window closed & vent the hallway some how.
You'll need about 8,000 btu to cool the room to 20C or below.
I think the a/c will use more juice than the rig:(

Hi Pilgrim57 :)

Thanks for your input, yeah think i will go ahead change layout of mancave n set up aircon to see just how effective it is, it kept the local ice cream shop cool so it cant be that bad :)

If i cant live with the noise etc then i will consider a water chiller in time :)

I'm gettin aircon for darkstar and weebeastie should arrive tommorow.

Problem with these Magny-Cours dodeca chips is they shut down at 70°C and the ambient in that room is about 50° with all the hot air that weebeastie is pumpin out.

 Name dropper :D

I could reccomend the af10000e aircon just set it up and working a treat, unfortunately there aint that much to cool .... just yet :)

I've just lowered my clock down to 3.8 @ 1.1v and its come down to the temps I had before, so hopefully it won't lose much PPD :)

Heh, I've just ordered an aircon unit but not an Argos one

:p:D Actually it aint so bad have only had it on one full day dropped from ambient 22 degrees and stayed at 14 degrees for the rest of the day lowered my gpu's to 42 from 50 not great but hey ho progress none the less.

The fluid in my rig has risen from 42 C to nearly 70C according to my logs, so I've had to cancel cpu folding. I haven't been able to sit in my room since the temps started rising a week or so ago. Thank god for the bit of rain we've had recently...
