I'm currently using xampp on windows (and mamp on mac) as a local apache, however I'd like to do it properly on an old laptop I have (that can stay on all the time in another room).

What distro would be easiest/best for this?

Laptop spec isn't bad... 1.4Ghz/1.25Gb ram....

Wasn't a fan of Ubuntu - but this was a long time ago!

The newest version of Ubuntu is Feisty Fawn [7.04] and is very good. Lots of stuff really does just work out the box. Wireless access for instance should work straight away and supports WEP and WPA.

It is worth a try. Will only cost you the time to download and install it. [Not very long if you have BB]

Debian. It shares many qualities with its popular offspring, Ubuntu, and is more suited to a server environment in terms of resource consumption and stability.

Seconded... Debian is known to be ridiculously stable (the reason for this is that everything is tested to death!!).

The only perceivable downside is that you don't get "cutting edge" with Debian - but do you need that on a server?

I have always liked opensuse and find it very easy to use, also with 10.2 it pretty much comes with everything that you need to get you started.
OpenSuSE is very nice to use (still have it on one of my boxes) - but it is a big, bloated distro. not exactly ideal for a server...
