what would you guys recommend for an AMD 1.1ghz pc and 256 of RAM? ive already tried mint and ubuntu, and the graphical installers are so dog slow i got quite annoyed with it. anyone got any tips or advice? cheers! (i wanna get 20 quid for this pc :p)

Arch Linux, provided you have some experance in Linux, or you are a fast learner.

I run a PIII 500Mhz 128Mb run fine with it.

Xubuntu is a possibility as well. Runs happily on my ageing xp2400 with 256Mb of ram with little to no tweaking.

slackware if its server based.

if its not what you using it for, dont see how people can say install this distro when they have no idea what the pcs going to be used for

It'll be your RAM, I installed ubuntu on a 1Ghz Athlon with 512Meg and it was absolutly fine. Lack of mem really kills performance.

That being, said, the above suggestions are good.

I'd maybe just install Xbuntu, or another lighterweight win manager. Maybe Debian + WindowMaker or something.
