I am still waiting for the story of young man who married a successful woman, only to have a divorce, take the children and demand a monthly salary and the house that she paid for.
Well an acquaintance of mine just got divorced after 19 years of (rough) marriage.
She has effectively gone a bit insane but won't accept help and won't admit she has, as a result she's become an unpredictable, frankly horrible person that holds a grudge until the end of time and won't think twice about lying to get her own way.
Their divorce (instigated by her) lasted 9 months, cost each side around 15,000 in costs (though she was eligible for "support" as she doesn't and never has worked for more than 8k a year in her life, other party paid for everything).
They have a child aged 14 between them who very much wants to stay with his dad as his mum has been nothing but a force for grief through his childhood while his dad has been a parent to him.
The eventual settlement?
The child does what he wants (i.e. goes with the dad), they each take one car from a pair, the house gets sold and split down the middle (she hasn't paid a penny into it from the day it was bought, in fact it was the dad who bought it and spent 2 years of his life doing it up before she moved in, making it worth half a million) and the dad has to pay HER so much per month as she isn't able to support herself because she's never had to go and get a job. She also gets 33% of his pension (he's a police officer so has had a pensions since he was 50 which tops up his salary until he is 65) until he dies and if she re-marries and croaks it before her new husband the dad has to keep paying this to the husband.
So the dad is now left having to pay maintenance to her, his salary has gone down each month due to her getting 33% of his pension contribution and when the house sells (that he is currently living in with the kid and paying all of the mortgage/bills for) he will get half of it.
That's the state of the UK divorce system, this was considered a damned good outcome by all lawyers asked...
This same woman has since gone even ore insane and committed acts of criminal GBH/criminal damage to the property and car yet getting a restraining order would realistically cost well over 1.5k so he's just sitting it out and hoping she doesn't do something terrible with their son.
Whatever you do, if you're a man and get divorced in the UK, do ensure you lube well first.
