Hi everyone,

Could anyone tell me if there is a preferred free divx codec these days and where to get it from?
If not, what's the best one to buy?

Thanks very much.

Codecs

Hi,

I use divx community codec, but obviously it depends on what you want to do?

Theres quite a few free ones out there still. Just search google for free divx codecs.

I believe if you download divx for windows it comes with the divx codec anyway. If your burning with nero then look for the nero plugin pack.

Any more questions pm me and ill be happy to help.

Just be aware not to download and install a load of simular codecs because you may find they conflict. As already mentioned I have the following installed

FFDShow (for video only)
DIVX Codec only from www.divx.com DIVX encoded movies (P2P springs to mind ;) )
AC3 Filter (for sound only)

Processes everything I need

VLC - The only thing you'll ever need for playback.

I have to agree with this. I took me a while to be pursuaded to install it, but now its the only thing needed for video playback. Codecs.. who needs them! :)

Are you sure you need ffdshow AND DivX AND AC3? Recently re-installed, chucked ffdshow and VLC on there and i've got full 5.1 during playback of my compressed media.

ffdshow will decode al FourCC's (DivX, XviD etc), so nothing else is needed.
