For me it depends on the house, I tend to think of carpets with a nostalgic 70's hue, whereas wooden floors go further back to the turn of the century and before, they are back in fashion now and the variety and technology means that you can get just about whatever you want as long as you have the budget.
Unfortunately mine doesn't stretch to underfloor heating, but maybe in the next house, or possibly in the bedroom when we do that.
