So I'm just putting together my new server build and haven't got round to either buying or making a case yet. Because I'm so impatient I wanted to get it up and running right away so I decided I needed a CIY caddy to hold my new disk so they didnt get damaged or get too hot.

Now here was the problem. I didn't have any materials at hand and the rain is stopping me going to B&Q to pick some up, so that only left me with one option.

Yup the only material I had lying around was Lego. So I pieced together the above caddy to atleast mean I can get the server ready and built.

Oh and the little men are there to guard it from the cat.

The specs of the server are as follows:

Asus P5LD2VM-DH/C
Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 1.60GHz
Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC2-4200C4
Zalman CNPS8000 Ultra Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler
4 x 500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ Spinpoint

All of this is going be setup in a Raid-5 array (well it already is thanks to the fantastic HDD caddy :D) running windows server 2003 R2. Its going to be my main file server and backup server and will be storing all my music and dvds eventually.

Excellent work,i now challenge you to make a full pc out of lego!

TBH I'm considering this but I might have to spend more on Lego to build it then I would do to just buy a case!

UPDATE:

OK so I thought of a good use for those free-loading little men standing on my caddy.

Yup, they are now a deluxe model air filter holder :D

I really want to take this further but my supply of Lego is dwindling. Time to raid some car boots and see what else I can find.

Didn't realise people would like this so much :)

I've been inspired to make it a bit better so I dismantelled the existing caddy this morning and rebuilt it.

So heres the new and improved Lego HDD Caddy

Because this is going to be sitting on a shelf behind me, I decided to try and make it as space effecient as possible so I added a compartment to the bottom for the PSU to sit in. I also found a way to better fit the filter into the design.

But the most important thing is that I found a load more Lego men! Its like a little party going on now.
