Hi all,

I am planning on decking over some of my garden but it would be a real hassle to get it flat, The size is approx 23' x 23', To do this i would obviously be required to raise the platform slightly off the ground (no higher that 200mm), Could i use these..

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.j...646&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories<{9372012}/categories%3C{9372019}/categories%3C{9372069}/categories%3C{9572018}/specificationsProductType=fence_post_support_spikes

With 200mm of fencepost in for the decking joists and decking to rest on, would this be ok or would it sink? would i have to actually concrete the fencepost's in?

Thanks

It depends a lot on what your ground is like really. When I did our decking which is 30' x 20' I made small concrete pads approx 10" x 10" x 24" deep and then built the decking up from those and its rock steady.
Our garden does slope quite a bit but this method did the job perfect ;)

Thought I'd resurrect a DIY thread than start a new. Perhaps we can make this a general DIY thread, if there isn't already one?

I'm after a circular saw so I can start making my own shelves and whatnot. Are there any brands I should be looking at? Or types of circular saw? I notice the blades come in different sizes and obviously different power ratings, but is that it?

Circular saws won't give you an absolute straight edge unless you set up straight edge and clamps, if you have a local timber yard they will happily rip down ply / mdf sheets into 300 widths then you just cut to length.

If all your doing is one weekend then try and hire one, it'll be a good make and model and more than capable, if buy a cheap one it'll be rubbish.

I got a Black & Decker proper workbench thing for my birthday, that'll help me along.

Am I looking at spending 100 notes? 200? I want one as I can see me getting a fair bit of use out of in the future - I want to be able to do everything myself.

I did this also. I have a lower deck which is around 8x3 metres and an upper deck which is around 6x5 metres. Concrete pads using heavy duty paving slabs worked wonders for me. No worry of posts losing gound then
