My impatience has reared its ugly head and my Mrs said she would treat me to a DK2 which will be here tomorrow. I understand that W10 has some issues with it, so looking for any tips for games like ED/PCars so I am not wasting all day trying to get it set-up.

Anyone have one and got any tips is muchly appreciated :)

Tips to trying it rather than the tech is to do 15-30minute intervals to start off. Some games are smooth and easy but others will make you feel sick. Eventually you get use to it.

With consumer version set for Q1, are you sure you want to go for the DK2?

From what has been said, the differences between them put them worlds apart. Not jsut in quality but smoothness due to slightly higher display and if the software does what it says on the tin, minimal latency, which is what makes me feel sick and is the biggest impact to realism.

Will do that cheers and yer, I did warn the Mrs that it would be dead money and she had no other idea's of what to get me so the Rift was a fair shout. At least I can also decide if it is worth going for the official as well and if I will use it much.

^

Exactly same position. The bird said do you still want to get the Oculus but have decided that it is best to wait after trying current versions.

They were fun but just a teaser and will never get used again once the new one is released. No latency is a big deal, i hope liquid VR comes through with it

I loved 3D and gamed on it loads but support for that has taken a bit of a dive and most times 2560x1440 doesn't work properly if at all. If the main release is massively better and I have enjoyed the DK2, I have no problem buying again and if I can't get on with it, well no bother.

I really did argue and argue with myself on what to do and looks like my common sense side lost out big time. I know I should have waited but ED is my game of the last year and glued to it and can't wait to play in VR.

Well, it isn't a big spend for the enjoyment it brings and wont be hard to shed even when the new one comes out.

I do regret not trying out Dying Light on the DK2 even if it wasn't designed for it and so has the view fixed to your mouse movement. Imagine the terror of running from those night zombies and trying to escape by jumping between the buildings only to take a glimpse of the long drop and hordes below you. The game goes from a zombie shooter to a free roam horror!

Well fingers crossed it all goes smooth and no major issues. I am sure google will be used a fair chunk tomorrow :D

with Vive pushed back to April and still no news on when OR is going to be out, it looks like you'll get a good few months out of it and still be able to pass it on and get some cash back

if you are anything like me, you won't have it for more than a couple of weeks before the low resolution does you in

I am hoping that isn't the case with the res and in truth, I am really only playing ED, which reading about works very well with the DK2 but fingers crossed it arrives today. Not showing as posted on the bay but might mean he hasn't updated it.

Thats still dev, why not wait till the release date announcement tomorrow Greg ?

In truth Chop, I hunted and hunted for news on the Rift and I couldn't find anything out about it for release and didn't even know there would be mention today. Got something I can read up on please?

DK2 owner here. It was a little bit fiddly but I got it working. Just following the win 10 Dk2 guides as best you can really. Can confirm Euro truck 2 works without a hitch, and most of the demos i have tried.

Owned once since October, in fact. Win 7 was simpler times haha.

Thanks and anything that will blow me away in awesomeness or are they all pretty much a muchness?

@gregster, Elite Dangerous definitely, As I see you play that on youtube.

For little demo's and such:

Don't let go! (This is a must)
Back to dinosaur island (free little game/video on steam)

And Euro Truck Sim 2 if that's your thing, there's a lot. Check out Riftarcade.

Nice one thanks and yer, the main reason I bought it was for ED, so that is good news :)

Thanks for the info as well.

The last time I tried VR must have been some 20+ years ago at an event in Earls Court and whilst it was pretty good, my eyes killed me for a while after.

I have seen lots of people have issues with W10 and that was on an older 10 build, so fingers crossed it is fine now and it will be with me tomorrow as he couldn't get to the post office yesterday. At least it gives me some good time to read up.

VR 20 years ago was garbage compared to what we have now. Even the commercial versions.

We've still got a long way to go, but we've definitely come a good ways in the past few years.

As for Windows 10, I recommend using this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3psikl/vr_game_manager_update_runtime_switcher_edition/

This should allow you to run games using old runtimes that 'technically' aren't compatible with W10.

I read that thread 2 minutes ago and seems pretty straight forward cheers Sean. I have it bookmarked as well just in case :)

No worries Chop and even if it is released in January, I don't care what I lose on the DK2. I understand tech moves quickly and I am quite surprised I held out this long in truth.

OMFG!!!

Seriously, why the **** didn't I buy this earlier? I am blown away in truth and have only tried Back to dinosaur Island and Elite Dangerous. Set-up was really easy and nothing complicated and it basically worked out of the box.

One gripe thus far and I was expecting it.... Resolution! Immersion makes up for it but for the complete package, the res needs to be better. After playing for an hour, I am totally sold and will certainly be getting the CV1.

I will give it a few days of playing before I give a review but there will be a review, so for those interested and any questions, ask away :)

Haha :D

Like me you used 3dvision quite a lot, does dk2 share any of the same traits? Like it straining your eyes after an hour or so, or does the weight of the thing being clipped to your face get too much?

Will be a few years before I consider investing in vr, let the market settle down and standardize somewhat.

Clarity is better on 3DVision but compared to the DK2, it looks like 2D in comparison. Depth and immersion are so good, I can forgive the image quality.

Do you use joystick in elite? With the headset on have you found yourself hitting the wrong buttons at all?

I do use a X52 and I also use voice attack, so no need for the keyboard but I have used the KB for so long, I find myself looking down to find the boost key and number keys and all I see is my virtual legs and cockpit :D I am slowly getting used to it and won't be long before everything is second nature. Anyone who has a decent machine and played ED a lot (like me) needs to at least give this a try..... Totally awesomesauce

Glad you're enjoying it Greg. The CV1 is OLED HD in both eyes so it should be awesome.

That will just make it the nuts really. I can understand why people don't like the res and it does make reading hard in ED for example (and I have set it to the green HUD) but again, immersion makes up for IQ and then some.

Great isn't it. Depth perception is considerably more realistic imo than any 3d panel. Most of the nay sayers shout about resolution and latency but given the speed of panel development and the sheer investment in phone screen manufacturing, i dont think we are far off getting far more acceptable resolutions. Latency can be fixed via stuff in development like liquid VR.

Considering it is a developers kit and a very premature one (designed when they ahd far less funding and attention) i think it is very good!

I hope it takes off when it hit the shelves so that we see both support from normal games and games dedicated to VR come out en masse.

I would love to see a 21:9 3440 by 1440 split panel in one over the current ratio

Yer, like I said to PGI, it makes 3DVision look like 2D and totally blows it out of the water. I am sold on getting the CV1 and probably the next (CV2?)

Think Gregster and me had the same reaction lol. Back to Dino island is great but short. Glad you're enjoying it!

Haha, I actually said it as well and I was the only one in my house :D I am seriously impressed and getting used to leaning in to read things in ED.

cool.

Might have to see if i can borrow the one from work at some point.

Well worth a borrow bud. At least then you can have some play time alone and see for yourself what you think.

I have been glued to ED pretty much and the immersion is fantastic but agreed Oliver and I also think you need at least 2560x1440 per eye. Edges are quite bad at the DK2 res and whilst it is massively fluid and everything works as it should, I just know with a better res, I wouldn't take it off, so maybe not a bad thing. My eyes do hurt a bit but I put that down to the length of time I have played and the lower res quality and could see with a better image, you could spend far more time with it.

Overall, so far I am really pleased I bought it and for my needs, it is doing it's job. ED: Horizons was jaw droppingly good when flying through a canyon on a planet and landing/driving about in the SRV but HL2 made me feel a bit sick with how it didn't move correctly. Not sure if that was down to me not setting up properly or something else but not fussed.

I should eloborate.

Myself as an example. my left eye just see's shapes that are Very very Blurry.
Cant read anything with it as words merge into a mess...

I can kinda see the 3d effect in films, just no where close to what others can.
Although i cant sit through a full 3d film :( My right eye starts to hurt and i get a migraine!

The OR should work ok for me right?

If you can see 3D in 3D films albeit limited, it will be the same effect on the OR but I wouldn't advise it for you if you get migraines in truth. It is tough on my eyes and I have good 20/20 vision but I did play for several hours, which might have been a bit much for the first day and I need to get used to it a bit more.

I did see that demo and it does look good. ED is just incredible with VR and space games seem to really suit it and while I was meant to test so many games yesterday and see what was what, I found myself just hooked on ED, so it will need to be good to lure me away.

There is an App I tried this morning and it is incredible. "Virtual Desktop" - I always stream my films to my TV's but this makes it like an IMAX that is in space and is totally incredible. It is like watching a massive curved screen whilst floating in space, it needs to be seen first hand to show how good it is and so long as your film is decent quality, the picture is pretty damned good.

LMFAO, I just downloaded a sample porn vid (for review purposes of course) and it actually really works lol. I was expecting something a little crap but nope, worked a treat. :D

Sorry guys but it is freakin awesome lol. From simple things like Titans of Space/Apollo 11 experience to ED/PCars and even watching films is incredible. I have mentioned the res and that is the downside but the immersion makes up for it in abundance.

:D

Does your eyes feel funny or do you feel any sickness after you have stopped playing Greg ?

I have got used to it and no eye strain or sickness now and Digitalx is quite correct and I am starting to ignore the pixels now and seeing a cleaner image.
