DLSS 5 preview

First burnt connecters because of the increased power draw:

Probably a good idea to power limit cards a bit when testing this!

Yup - usual disclaimer that we shouldn't have to do this ****, yadda yadda, but DLSS 5 in some games takes the power draw to the absolute ultimate. I make sure I have my most conservative undervolt profile on in Afterburner, and I have a Wireview Pro 2 on my 5090FE now anyway so feel 'ok' about it all now.

Yeah this is what I was expecting to hear when I saw the big jump in power usage. It just requires and uses more power for that part of the chip I guess. Even when undervolted it will take what it needs so will still give a bump up in power draw. Monitor it and make sure you're ok with it.

In this random youtube example 421W becomes 533W! But about 75W power comes from the PCIE I guess.

Depends on the card what is being powered by the PCIE slot.

I've seen a lot of Buildzoid GPU breakdowns and it seems that often very little is wired up to draw power from the PCIE slot.

You can offload the neural rendering workload to another card. Quick, everyone buy a 5050 for PhysX DLSS5

While it looks impressive one problem I have is the consistency isn't quite 100% - for example if a character is walking along with their head bobbing back and forth in a regular pattern I can't unsee how the face kind of morphs between two close but not identical versions of itself between each of the extremes of movement.

Had a similar issue with earlier versions of DLSS, though it is harder to notice now though I still see instances of it, where the consistency wasn't quite there when seeing the same view regularly interrupted for example if driving down a road with fence posts every few metres which would briefly block your view of the scenery behind.

Something I'd overlooked a bit with this - where it is being "injected" into older games they don't always have the motion vectors and other data to feed into DLSS5 which would help with consistency - which a game designed from the ground up with it in mind would have - though that doesn't entirely solve the issue alone.

How is it possible for this to happen?

Surely there are hardware/software level features that prevent the card from going over a certain power threshold.

All I can think is that these thresholds are too high at present.

We so back baby! Like Jensen said the more you buy the more frames you save!

Well we've seen this before.

Power controls are set with expectations of how previous programs worked.

And then Furmark came along. It even got called a power virus because of the abnormal way it was making the card operate. And some of the controls put in to handle that were to recognise Furmark was running and cripple the card in response to control the power.

You can only test your GPU on what software is available. DLSS 5 didn't exist when the 5090 was launched so there was no way to test it

That being said cards should be designed to run safely at the maximum parameters allowed by its firmware. So even if you have no software that can make a 5090 use 600w the card should be designed to cope with 600w, because creating physical synthetic heatload is possible and should have been done in design and testing

Again its exaggerating detail, the problem is Star Citizen already is quite detailed so now the head look 20 years older and has some how become much darker skinned.

SC doesn't need DLSS5 IMO, the game is already beautiful and will continue to get better when they introduce RTGI, RT reflections etc....

Tried it in FFXIV at night, Not overblown but picks out details and nicely enhances the lighting. I posted it on the FFXIV sub reddit and 99% of the comments were just insulting, Then I got several PM's threatening harm, Absolutely insane.

This stuff really does highlight how many people out there truly need to be put into a psychiatric hospital for very lengthy stays.

I tried neural upstream with the Optiscaler fork version. I only tested it in one game but found it added a more intense 'hero glow' to the character (with a single pass) that I couldn't reduce enough compared to before. I also felt some shading was missing in the environment too but I didn't take time to properly compare that so maybe not.

I'll definitely give it another try at some point but I'm really happy with how I've got it set up in the couple of game's I'm playing just now and don't want to touch it. I wish I had more free time to experiment with it in other games.

last month i put about 150 hours in to this game, Dragoon Cat Girl...... Why did i do that??? I must have had my own moment of madness

I have to be honest, DLSS 5 is growing on me, the lighting can make a poorly lit game look much better but i think it falls down in the way Nvidia like to show it off, it exaggerates details so if a face has a lot of detail it exaggerates that to the point of uncanny valley, but from what i gather there is a toggle and if you don't crank it up so high it doesn't blowout to the point of making the character look much older and frankly a lot like, well..... human faces generated by AI.

I'm not too bothered about the faces to be honest, The environmental enhancements though I really like and once Nvidia move it over from FP8 to NVFP4, Happening in the next 1-2 months, We should get a nice perf increase which will hopefully also mean lower power use.

I 100% agree on the environment lighting being a big benefit. It's working wonders for me in the new Onimusha (some screens here), which has a realistic aesthetic but quite flat lighting without it.

As an untended side effect that would also be what stop's modders from making it work on RX 9000 series (RDNA 4) it doesn't support native FP4. RDNA 5 will tho.

The thing about DLSS 5 is it runs on CUDA and through ROCm AMD use HIPIFY tools to convert it to the their own HIP code on the fly, with it they run CUDA LLM's, i didn't understand how they did that when messing about in Comfyui with CUDA LLM's on my RX 7800 XT, or what Nvidia thought of it, so i looked in to it.... well that's how and whatever Nvidia think about that doesn't matter, technically they aren't using CUDA.

This is how modders got it working on AMD GPU's.

AMD might not have to create their own *FSR5*
