I'm curious, I just started a new Lightroom 3 catalog and told it to import some DNGs which used to be in a LR2 catalog...

They seem to have their star ratings and edits intact (didn't really want this), but I haven't referenced the original LR catalog files at all

Not saying this is a major problem, I'm just curious about it since I thought all the image data (manipulations, meta data etc) was stored in the catalog files?

So my question is: How does the structure work? what data is stored within the DNGs and what is stored in the LR Catalog files?

By default, DNG files don't have that extra data embedded within them, but there is an option in LR to have that information placed in an XMP sidecar within the DNG file if you want it ( normally the sidecar is separate from the DNG file ). Presumably, you must have this option switched on. If the XMP sidecar has been embedded into the DNG file, then some other programs that can read DNG files will be able to see the XMP sidecar data.

Personally, I don't use the DNG format, as I just don't see the advantage at this moment in time.
