Hey all,
I've always left DNS to my ISP, and configured all machines on the network to point to the modem's IP when it comes to setting the primary DNS address.
However, I remembered back when Google launched their DNS and I know about OpenDNS, but never really bothered to look in to it too much; until recently.
Now, I've been messing around with an app called DNSbench by Steve Gibson. Essentially, you run it, and it'll find the best DNS servers closest to you, and suggest ways to make the DNS better for your config. All well and good..
.. It suggested to use some servers, and to configure these on each local machine (forgoeing the link back to the modem), in a way have each machine resolve DNS from the internet itself. E.g. configure the primary and secondary DNS server instead of directing back through the modem. It says that most domestic modems aren't amazing at handling DNS from multiple PCs blah blah.
Is this the "proper" way to do it? As I said, I've always left DNS alone as I'm no network boff, but I'll try anything that lowers pings or improves browsing.
Anyone shed any light?
