DNS Internet Filtering

Where I used to work we used OpenDNS as a simple internet filter to block dodgy content. I've since started a new job and found that OpenDNS filtering is no longer free.

Internet searches seem to suggest a lot of people who didn't want to pay for OpenDNS switched to Dyn Internet Guide instead.

Was just wondering if anyone has used it on their system or if they went with something else?

Are you sure it's not still free? Seems so for me.

I paid for premium anyway and I'm sure it was like £6 for 2 years.

When I read about it a lot of small businesses were complaining that their accounts were being asked to pay a lot of money. Then looked at creating an account it didn't mention web filtering.

But following the link above filtering is mentioned and after creating an account filtering is there.

Now after months of proposing Dyn Internet Guide I'll have to change it all to OpenDNS

Isn't it free for home users but you have to pay if you're a business?

on that page above there's a link to "Learn more about OpenDNS solutions for schools and businesses." which then takes you to http://www.umbrella.com/ which I assume is the paid for version of opendns?

My experience of using it for my very basic home internet filtering for the kids is:

1: Go to opendns site
2: Read and note down 2 x IP addresses of their DNS servers
3: Add them to TCP/IP properties of the main and only network adapter in use on the home PC

The kids account does not have enough rights to change it to anything else. They also would not know how to do this at their ages anyway.

The site really pushes you in to Umbrella if you're looking at it from a business perspective, but I only have about 50 staff who'll be using it in the office, I don't need mobile, laptop or off site coverage.

I just logged back into my account and it's definitely different now, I don't have any filtering other than phishing protection. I think they'll let you sign up for free but as soon as they discover that your traffic levels are more than an individual user they'll email you saying that you have to upgrade. (that's what they did to me a while back anyway)
