Do folks alter the DNS on their router as I was told it a good idea to set it to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 But I don't really think it needed|?

It's something people to to protect themselves in the event that there's an issue with your ISPs DNS which it will be using if you don't change it. Absolutely no reason to use anything else if you don't have an issue as far as I know. 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 are just Google ran DNS.

Quad 9 (9.9.9.9) is recommended. Some are privacy based, other blocks ads. Just depends what type of DNS you want.
