Do all houses come with a floor hatch?

I live in Scotland. I think that, owing to our regs, you are more likely to have a underfloor space in old and new houses. But in my current house about 10-y-o, I can't find a hatch to inspect area for a leaking pipe. So it looks like I need to make one. I think my joists are 16" apart. I am quite agile, how wide do you think I need make it, remembering that the space under is only about 18" ?
Same here as well
IF you are smallish(not a fatty :D )
You will be able to get in there,i can,but hardest part is getting in and out

Ours just has some floor boards that aren't secured under the electric meter. Can kneel down in our crawl space plenty of head room

Yeah theres no way in hell im going in there lol, the two big spiders i found in the shed the other week left the shed... and showed up in my ****in bedroom! Had enough of spiders.

Don't forget rodents.

Parents had a house with a crawl space in the attic which was built as a 2nd floor for servants back in the day. The room sides were mostly vertical and there were tiny doors in the walls every so often to access the weird space between the wall and the inside of the sloped roof...

Recall mice nests being shovelled out of there for a whole summer.

I managed to get the original 13-y-o plans out of the council - no sign of a hatch. Most of the house is finished not in floorboards as in the good old days, but in 'nice' modern wood laminate. But in the spare bedroom, the cupboard just had 22mm chipboard. So I have sawn out a 14" opening between the joists, 28" long. Now waiting for heating chappie to come back. I wonder what he will say !

No there was no hatch, not even on the original house plans, so I have sawn one in a wardrobe. Hurray.
Oh dear, the holes between the rooms aren't big enough to get through. Boo

What kind of surface is there in the under-floor void?

Am in same situation, 1930s semi with an underfloor void of about 2-3 feet. Am clearing out the garden shed prior to converting to a nicer space. Am thinking about cutting a hatch under the stairs (as mentioned above by other posters), clearing out the builders rubble from the void, maybe dig down a couple of inches if possible, and storing various junk from the shed down there.

Anyone else explored their void or stored stuff there? (As the actress said ... )

Finding stashed porn should have its own thread :D.

And it should be a thing that if you find a stash you take it out, have a laugh about it then put it back AND add some fresh current day porn to it.. Also leave a note explaining the deal so any future finders can join the fun.
Becomes like a time capsule of sorts!

Wouldn't it just be a USB stick now, do top shelf mags still exist?

I found 70’s porn hidden in the attic cupboards between the eaves

Very hairy stuff

Not sure whether to take that literally or not:p.

Tip: if you have air bricks just above external ground level, you will have a small void below your ground floor (timber or concrete).if not, the ground floor is most likely concrete cast on the ground with no void.
