Do AMD x2 processors generate *any* heat? :-)

I'm still setting up XP, so I'm running this x2 3800/Freezer Pro at stock speed. The heat sink isn't warm, the heatpipes in it aren't warm, and I can touch the side of the CPU package and that's not warm either.

Either there's a little pocket of superheated plasma building up down there in an accidental insulating vacuum, or these things generate almost as much heat as a *********. There's no wonder this generation of chips overclock so well!

I'm only on an Asrock board, so 3GHz isn't on the cards. Neither's anything else until I've tested it thoroughly at 2GHz. But it won't stay there, that's for sure. If it won't at least match the 2.4GHz on the mobile Barton box it's replacing there'll be tears, because whatever folk say about improved memory controllers, better pipelining etc, MHz is still what matters most.

this is exactly what i was thinking after 10 hours of prime95 at stock on my X2 3800.

was just wanting confirmation everything was hunky dory before trying any clocks, but when i came back after 10 hours to find the large rear system fan kicking out cool air i had to take it apart and touch the heatsink (freezer pro 64).

and it was cold!

can't wait to get cracking with some OC...

^ balls to that. When i got my 146 i installed windows and a couple of other programs then went sdtraight into the bios and put it at 2.5ghz (1:1 with memory), fine into boot so i just put it at 2.8ghz (as many were getting with my stepping) primed at 2.8 and is stable, ive tried for more but 2.9 fails prime after 3hours but is stable in everything else. 3ghz fails superPI after 10 seconds or so. im happy with 2.8 until games require more then ill slacken timings a lot on my memory and stick a fan or 2 more into my case

Ah, I found some heat. Running 2x Prime 95 seems to have woken it up nicely. According to Speedfan I'm getting 39C under load (still at 2GHz).

they arnt designed to run at 2ghz! put it to 2.5 then run prime, should get to about 45-47c i would have though. then put it higher. my max load is 50c or 51c i think

A efficient heatsink will be warm/hot as it is an indication of how well it can take away the heat from the CPU so a cold heatsink can also indicate the contact isn't optimal.

As I said originally, it did originally make me wonder if there was something wrong. It turns out the only thing wrong was that the CPU was twiddling its thumbs... all 4 of them.

Sadly Wayne, despite the Mc I'm more your "spare security guard in the landing team" kinda guy. And I've definitely never been in a position to say "she canna tek ennimower!"

Maybe I should trying dating shorter women?

Oh, and Dutch, thanks for reminding me about Cool & Quiet. I noticed it in the BIOS just now and have turned it off. Despite all the reading I did before this purchase, as soon as the parts arrived I seem to have forgotten everything! :-)

I think thats a common misfortune lot of people have on these forums. It all boils down to over excitement. Thus making mistakes. You got to focus man! ;)
