Do any of you play WoW without add-ons/customised UIs?

I'd put money on you not being a very good player either, no offence. I can't see someone breaking the 2000+ Arena bracket, or raiding high end game content, with the default UI.

Blizzard originally designed the game on the default UI, so it must be possible to raid end game content with it.

I was co-GM and RL of a guild when I used to play and tbh I only ever used DBM, Xpearl, CTRA2, Mobmap , Gatherer and Titan Panel.

Mainly for simplicity and because I did have a really aweseome setup long ago but when a large patch came out it b0rked nearly all of it. I vowed never again to waste so much time so from then on kept it simple.

Still owned in healing meters and all that crap without half the addons tho ;)

Over the years blizz have implemented a lot of the functionality from some of the most common mods or banned the most useful so I don't bother with any these days.

Isnt it a bit of a contradiction to say that you cant be a good player unless you use certain mods? Isnt that then a case of the mods making the person a good player more than the player itself? A bit like saying that you cant be a good formula one driver unless you are driving a maclaren or ferrari?

EDIT : Thats a nice looking UI Margaret, I like my UIs in games to be as minimalistic as possible, some screenies I have seen of peoples UIs are so crowded that they are almost effectively playing the game in a 4 inch by 6 inch window.

No it isn't.

Some things in WoW almost literally can't be done without the aid of addons. This is because when you have 25/40 people and need to target 1 person and cast a spell in like 1 second, you really can't do that without an addon of some description.

Your racing analogy is very wrong. In F1 the cars are everything now, you could be a driving god but if you are in a rubbish car you won't keep up with the others.

So you absolutely cannot be a good player unless you use mod X, Y and Z? Is the player a good player due to themselves, or a good player because they use mod X, Y and Z? Does that person stop being a good player if they stop using those mods? In which case is it not the mod which is making them a good player rather than themselves?

No way that you can be inherently a good player?

You can be a good player certainly but imagine a good ice hockey player trying to play a match kitted out in scuba gear with flippers on and a banana for a stick when everyone else has the proper gear. It doesn't make the guy less of a player, just less likely to suceed.

Thats what I figured, you might well be less effective without the mods, but you still can be a good player. A person doesnt simply become a bad player if he stops using the mods (if they did then its down to the mods rather than the player). So , less effective certainly, but its possible to inherently be a good player even without the mods, just not as good as a good player with the mods.

And quite possibly not as good as you need to be to keep up with the game.

I've only got one char at Level 65 and never yet hit endgame content because the goalposts keep moving but from experience of other games of this ilk you will not be too popular if you can't hold your own at high levels.

That said, there are many guilds out there I'm sure with a much more casual approach, the must have X Y Z mod approach to running aguild is not the norm unless you are in a pretty hardcore raiding guild. If that's the kind of play you are into, you will end up wanting some of the mods that help you out.

Definitely - I know some very skilled multiclass players that use zero mods because of PC restrictions.

Lower to middle raiding is doable, but I don't think they would have got on especially well in Sunwell Plateau without even timers etc though.

This is my UI which takes about 50 addons.

Most of the addons are hidden until required - such as the TomTom quest addon that puts an arrow to quest objective locations :D

I just like to keep a minimal and clean UI so have max viewable screen - but I don't raid.

Have you seen some of the UI's people have made? Sure, if you have the artistic sense of a 12 year old you can make some ugly, ugly creations. Most dont.

May I ask what mods you are using? in particular the DPS meters - they look extremely cool as well as the raid health bars.

I completely disagree with the idea that the "best" players use customized user interfaces.

PvP competitions are played on the default Blizzard User Interface for example. PvP is seriously hard when you get to the top arena brackets.

I think User Interfaces just do little things that you can't be bothered to do yourself or they make it visibly easier to see/access and do things.
I've used hundreds of combinations over the time I've played, and I'm settled on the kinda basic Blizzard one at the moment, with a few little extras.
