Just thought i'd ask as Britian is currently in a big freeze lol.
I'm a security guard outside ( 5 hours per day / mon-fri ).
Was off last week for 2 days as i finaly got a cold but back to work this monday.

I have to say i dont feel the cold that much.
i wear tracksuit bottoms under my trousers then a pair of wind / water proof trousers over them.
a hat and two coats with the hoods up so im pretty snug.
you could say im actualy wearing my office :D

So do any of you guys work outside in your job?
how do you combat the cold?
any tips for me and others to pass on ?

Layers. Thick clothes are bad as if you get a bit too hot, you take it off and then you freeze. The layers trap air, which takes longer to cool (or heat, hence the very long airy dresses they wear in hotter countries).

I'm a postie and just wear my normal trousers with a shirt, fleece, jacket and a hat and gloves and carry my waterproof trousers in my bag ... it's freezing to start with but it's not long until i'm warmed up and even breaking a sweat cue remove hat cool down and repeat.

Yeah get yourself some good bottom layers. Long Johns and a thin micro fibre top can work wonders.

Also, my personal recommendation:-

Yes you look like a tool in it but they are extremely warm.

O.o you say you don't feel the cold much, but wear like 3 layers on just your legs?

*EDIT*

Can't really help as I don't work outside... but layers are basically the key.

Considering we live in such a ****ed up and litigious society, my employer, the City Council, see to it that I don't freeze when out on a job.

\0/ for free fleeces and hats. :)

Yes

All depends what I'm doing Things like walking a few miles or gas cutting keeps you warm. So basically normal clothes, with more layers for when you stop.

if I'm stood on a trailer going 6 miles at walking pace. Then 2 t-shirts, 1 fleece, 1 hoodie, 1 welding coat (seem to be more wind proof than our normal ones). Then pair of trousers and a pair of welding trousers. A balaclava and the hood up with a helmet jammed on top and back to wind. Remember to tuck lairs in.

Yep I work outside, aslong as one dresses appropriately all is good.

For the cold wet months Skiing trousers can't be beaten for the bottom half, Warm and waterproof.

I just shop around army surplus places and farm shops. Always find great stuff for working in all weathers. :)

Outside mainly at night. I just wear thermals under my clothes and I usually still get too warm moving about so can work in thermals and a jumper even in sub zero temps.

Rarely need a jacket, unless it's raining.

kind of outside, i am hgv driver, so i drive somewere then have to unload sacks of parcels through into a small sorting room type thing, i wear 3 tshirts, hoody, hat, gloves and 2 pairs of socks :)

I have to spend some of my time outside, though I can hide indoors if I want. Apart from the normal layering of clothes I strongly advise getting some really decent heavy socks (you loose loads of heat from your feet) and get thermal leggings - available from any good outdoors shop or the interwebs. Also, make sure your shoes are lovely and dry each morning.

When walking to and from work I am usually quite happy with heavy socks, trousers, t-shirt, long-sleeve shirt, fleece, coat and beanie - I quite often forgo gloves. The thermals are for times when I know I'll be stationary outside for long periods of time - I find I can wear them inside and outside without overheating.

I work outside 5-12am and the cold is a *****

I wore 2 t-shirts, a jumper and 2 coats last night and still froze my gonads off. Could barely move with all those layers.

Its the fingers that get the coldest as i cant wear full finger gloves as i cant work with them on. Too hindering.

Wear some marigolds then some thinner gloves over the top. Sounds gay but should keep your hands very warm but still have easy movement of your fingers.
