I don't think the North West counts as near Scotland...I see... so you count China too, do you?
I just expanded the region from my post to include further north too.
Last time I looked in Lincoln area it was hard to find a 2/3 bed semi for under £750... detached was much more than that and in London surrounding area is near impossible to find a 3-bed detached house for under £1,000/month rent... I stand by my statement of that.
I know there are still some places up north getting close to Scotland where there's no real work and you can get much cheaper housing... just no job to pay for it

Yes... outside of London for a person working inside of London is unlikely to have someone commuting from the lake district...
OP, based on your attitude, I'd say you're lucky to have been earning £33k! Who in their right mind packs in a £33k job and goes to the job centre? 
If you didn't like the job, surely you'd look for another one while still getting a salary.
Certainly can't have a very frugal lifestyle - I earn similar, have a £700+ a month mortgage, a new car, 2 kids and still save money.

What a load of rubbish, no real work lol what do class as real work by the way.
I'm in the north west, had a job since I was 14. never not been in work, so there are jobs out there. Earn more than the OP but that's through working hard and taking opportunities when they arise. I was on less than 20k for quite some time and managed to live alright. There's jobs up here that pay more than mine, you just need to work to get them.
